I have to admit I went back and forth on this one.

I've heard "oh-gul" (long O) and "aw-gul" (like 'caught'). I always figured it was a regional difference.

The dictionary seems to list both as valid pronunciations.

The OED also lists them both as valid, although I think it calls out "aw-gul" as specifically American.

I always figured it was plain old mispronunciation, mostly because I never noticed a pattern in who pronounced it which way, but looked it up before I posted the poll. I was wrong!

I've gotten teased enough about my own word choices and pronunciation that my default mode is to assume that when someone speaks differently than I do, it's due to regional or cultural differences.

(And that's true not just for English. I hear those difference in Chinese as well.)

The times I remember being teased about it (usually by my dad, *grimace*), it's because I picked the word up from text and applied my own pronunciation to it, so regional differences in pronunciation usually doesn't occur to me at first.

I spent YEARS thinking "rapport" was "rap-port" and not "ra-por" because I didn't realize it was French in origin!
