Right!

So! You fiber artists! Do you have any idea how to do this sort of weave?

I can probably work it out by staring at the pictures and messing with yarn/cord, but if you know of any explanations or tutorials, or even proper terminology so I can do searches, that would go a whole lot faster. :)

Do you have a picture of how you want it to look when it's finished? A friend of mine is visiting us right now and she's really into fiber arts, including SCA-era weaving and braiding, but she thinks she might have a better chance of giving input if she can see the intended finished product. Her more general initial suggestion is to possibly try looking for/adapting from warpless weaving or sprang, or there might be fingerloop braiding techniques that could maybe give you the look you want.

It should end up something like this: https://www.facebook.com/gigawattscosplay/photos/a.434389143330132.1073741835.390109861091394/458674160901630/?type=3&permPage=1

This is the best shot I've found of the dress showing the armbands and neck strap: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/54/9e/f0/549ef08b5c8adffef4dd9aeb22efd0fe.jpg

She reports that she hasn't seen something exactly like that, but suggests that you might be able to adapt techniques from a couple of Viking-era crafts, either naalbinding (a knot-based fabric creation technique) or trichinopoly chain, aka Viking wire weaving or wire knit. From the description on the facebook post and comparing it with some of the images online of trichinopoly (like this one, for example), it looks to me like you could maybe use a flat/rectagular-ish band of craft foam core to wrap the strands around instead of the round dowel in the viking knit tutorial? But I'm not super crafty myself so I'm really just guessing.

Thank you! I'll do some poking around about those, although I may just end up doing a cobra paracord-style weave, as that seems to be relatively quick!

That makes sense! I would think if you can find the right base material (gunmetal-colored leather, maybe?) that could look really good.
