Dallas, this is your legacy

Crossposted from Glamorous in Retrospect. Author: Toby.

Got in to Osaka finally. It’s raining, and we realize there are no stairs at the station near the hotel, so we decide to catch a cab from the main Osaka station.

The cabbie asks us what country we’re from, and Stephanie tells him “USA”. He then asks, “New York?” As a Texan, I’m legally obligated to be offended by that, but I’m too strung out so I let it slide. Stephanie tells him “Dallas”, and I follow up with “Texas”.

He gets this look of recognition, then says, “Dallas! Kennedy! BANG!”, making a finger gun for the last bit.

Seriously. That was our cab ride. Cool guy.

When I'm out of state in the US and say I'm from New York, they always assume New York City, which may be true in my case (though not the skyscraper part of it they're thinking of) but New York is a very big state! Then they tell me they don't think I sound like a New Yorker.

Ah, yes, I know the feeling: "You don't SOUND like your're from Texas!" Yeah, what you're thinking of is a very rural accent. City folks tend to sound more like generic Midwesterners.
