Every comment on recipe blogs.

“I just started Paleo yesterday, and I’m wondering if there’s a way to make this without the ingredients.”

“I didn’t have any eggs, so I replaced them with a banana-chia-flaxseed pulse. It turned out terrible; this recipe is terrible.”

edit: in the Metafilter thread where I found the link to the article, someone quotes an actual comment from a recipe she found on Pinterest: "This was my first time making Saag. I followed the recipe exactly with only one change. I replaced the cheese with shrimp. "

The comments to that article are gold!

"Coconut milk actually comes from a very small coconut cow that lives inside the coconut. The coconut cow is easily startled and must be coaxed from its hiding spot with a combination of fresh grass and aromatherapy candles. (Do not feed candles to the cow.) Milk the cow gently while playing soothing music. Coconut cows make excellent pets and over time you may even have enough to have your own herd!

Caution: Coconut cows, much like the common house hippo, may hide in closets and steal peanut butter if they are allowed to roam free in your home."

Actually ... presumably the original recipe was saag paneer (paneer cheese with spinach sauce), and the person just decided to make saag shrimp. I've actually had saag chicken. So that's not all that weird.

I really liked the person who could only eat Yahtzee dice, though.

Except, as someone pointed out in the MeFi comments, it's like replacing pepperoni with mushrooms when you're making a pizza recipe: yes, there is such a thing as mushroom pizza, but if you follow the pepperoni pizza instructions you will end up with soup, because you need to adjust the prep for mushrooms.

Also, the commenter clarified: "The thing that is so baffling about the saag paneer example is that she substituted shrimp for paneer, and then declared that it felt like "something was missing.""

Well, yes, but perhaps the shrimp-lover knew enough about adding shrimp to similar preparations that se felt that was enough info ... of course, that doesn't explain the "something missing" comment.

And now you have me comparing saag paneer and saag prawn recipes.

xD

Mallory Ortberg is awesome.

However, I am not sure anything from her piece can top this (http://www.metafilter.com/106210/The-Pickiness-Of-The-Masses#3852905).
