If you're interested in how other cultures treat mental illnesses, this is an interesting article by a Westerner who underwent a ritual treatment for depression in Senegal. (Note: animal sacrifice, if you're squicked by that. Also on Esquire, if you're squicked by that. :D)

I especially draw your attention to the final four paragraphs, in which a Rwandan explains why they asked some Western mental health workers to leave after the genocide.*

* This is not to disparage Western talk therapy! But there are many and varied ways of treating things, and sometimes one works better in that place and with that person.
