It's that time of year again...

...The time where I go mad trying to work out how to do something in INDesign as I put together the ConDFW program book.

So. Does anyone know how to do the settings so that when I place a document it KEEPS THE ITALICS? I can get it to bring in all the styles I've applied to it, but not italics. Screenshot of settings I'm using behind the cut.

And I'm using the style mapping to map styles from the doc. Not that it works perfectly, but at least when I go to fix the paragraph styles, the stuff gets applied to all paragraphs with that style at once. With the italics thing, I've got over 50 panelist bios to handle, many of which have multiple books with italicized titles and OH GOD I DO NOT WANT TO ITALICIZE THEM INDIVIDUALLY.

I'm on a Mac. Is it possible this is another thing broken with the Mac, like the ability to export in printer spreads? (I suppose I should log in to work remotely tomorrow morning and try it there, to see if it works on InDesign on the PC there...)

I don't have ID at hand right now, so I can't test this, but if you create a character style in Word that has italics, and replace all words with italic formatting with the new style, that should import correctly.

In theory.

green_knight's solution should work -- another thing is if the italics come in on your import and go away when you fix your paragraph styles, what you can do is search for the italics and apply character styles to them in InD (since InD has better Find/Change options than word) before you fix your paragraph styles.
