Short version: the Getty Museum is making high-resolution (and I mean high--some over 100MB in size!) images of all their public domain artworks available. So far they’ve got 4600 images available, and will be adding more as time goes on.

One of the projects I've had in mind for years to try--manipulating a photo of a person into a historical portrait, as I've seen some do--has just become that much closer to reality! As in: I can get a nice, high-res image that I can zoom in on when I do repainting and other things to it, so the final result should look better.
