Over on AskMetafilter, the COOLEST PARENTS EVAR. They've built a small secret room in their house for their kids to discover, and are furnishing it with books about secret rooms, passages, areas, etc. They're asking MeFites for book suggestions.

ETA: If you don't have a MeFi account, I'll be happy to post suggestions that aren't duplicated over there.

...I want new parents and a time machine.

They've had several offers for adoption!

How cool is that? I'd hunt up a copy of Loretta Mason Potts--which I did for my kids, but sadly, neither showed any interest in the kind of sf and fantasy that I did when young. (I have hope for grandkids, though!)

Mind if I add that to the list of recs over there? I figure I'll wait a bit, as f-listers seem to be recommending them here, and then post any suggestion that hasn't been duplicated by then.

(MeFi requires a $5 fee to create a account, to cut down trolls and spammers, and I don't expect anyone to create an account themselves just for this!)

I don't need yet another time sink, especially one with that horrible dark green background--sure, by all means!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2013-07-30 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

I'm used to the green background, but when I go over to the blue--they color-code the different areas of the site and call them by that--which is where they post the community linkblogging stuff, it makes my eyeballs vibrate to read.

Yeah--any kind of dark background hurts my eyes.

I am in love with Bookmarklets for Zapping Annoyances, (https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/zap.html), most especially the "Zap Colors" one, which will change a webpage to black text on white with blue and purple links. (Works in IE, Firefox, and Opera, but not Safari)

Thanks! Unfortunately this mac uses Safari, but hey.

I ended up installing Firefox on mine at home, because I didn't want to learn the quirks of another damn browser. XD As a web professional, I feel vaguely guilty about that, but not enough to learn the quirks of another damn browser.

Although I admit I use Chrome for my Facebook browsing, in the probably-vain hope that it'll keep Facebook from tracking too many of my online activities. I have no idea why I didn't start using Safari for that at home.

I loved Firefox when I had a pc. But the Ipad only seems to have Safari, and I want my machines all compatible, so I guess it's Safari. It's not that bad.

I'm surprised no one recced The Dark is Rising Sequence. It's about as closely related to the theme as a lot of the other suggestions and should be one of those "musts" for kids. I'd do it but I can't make an account right now!

I figure I'll wait a bit for people to spontaneously recommend things here and then post anything that hasn't been duplicated over there. :D

Why not leave it empty for the children to fill themselves, instead of pre-colonizing it?

Because then they get twice the fun: discovering what has been hidden, and then hiding their own stuff.
