Derby day

I took about 600 photos, messing about with settings to see if I could freeze action. I've only gone through 140-ish so far tonight, and I expect that I have probably not managed to do great action shots because I have a cheaper (comparatively) lens, but I think some of them, at least, will be reasonably nice.

They're not going to be the sharpest of images just because I pushed the camera's ISO to 6400, to make the bit where the photos is created as sensitive to light as it can get, because my dinky little flash isn't going to make a dent as far away as the teams were (we were sitting on the front row, but there's a nice buffer zone to limit the amount of damage one of them can do if she loses control and slides out towards the audience). Anyway, ISO 6400 makes the photo fairly grainy.

These may be grainy, but I feel like there's a nice sense of movement to them. Also, I think it's hilarious that, to me, the light-haired woman in the blue bandana and helmet looks a lot like Drew Barrymore.

That second one is, I believe, my favorite shot of night.

Drew Barrymore there is the jammer for the Lone Star Assassins--the point-scorer for that round. You can tell because she's wearing the helmet cover with the star. (Viva la Revolucion's jammer is in the back there.) The helmet covers with the stripes mean something, but I've forgotten. You now know about 50% of what I know about roller derby. :D

ETA: Also, I've got more shots to upload to LJ/DW/Facebook tomorrow (although if anyone reading this knows my Flickr handle--it's not hard to figure out--they can go find them. :D)

The second one is awesome. You've got the movement and then all their faces. It's a lot of energy.

That's about the level of knowledge I retained from watching Whip It, too. *G*
