Mello again

Worked a bit more on refining Mello's face. Got a bit more of the crazy in there by making his eyes bigger and his irises smaller, but I don't think I can do more without giving him a big crazy grin and that just isn't working with the cross in his mouth.





Still not quite there, but I can't quite figure it out. Hrm.

Ah. Think I may have almost gotten it - it's my old bugbear of making the face too prognathic: pushing the lower jaw and muzzle area too far out.

Hee. Mello is very girly indeed, and I couldn't tell through his first appearance in the current timeline what his gender was, but after a bit it's clear from the art that he's a guy.

I also notice in many of the avatars you use, Melo's bangs tend to taper a bit towards the middle, leaving just the hint of, I dunno, "devilish horns" about his eyes? In your sketch here, his bangs are almost straight across, giving more of a waifish look. And waifs, as we all know, are innocent (except for the pickpocketing and occasional foul language).

AH ... *goes and looks at other reference* You're right - for the most part Obata's using Mello's bangs to stand in as his eyebrows, and emphasizing that when he's crazy/malicious and de-emphasizing when he's thinking.

Him grinning with that thing clenched between his teeth would make for an interesting image too, though. Just the mere idea of it.

It's the freaky-ass characters that carry it off; otherwise it'd be a mildly interesting suspense story.
