Toby forwarded me this: THANK YOU FOR ALWAYS LISTENING TO ME COMPLAIN ABOUT MY JOB FOR HOURS ON END EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHO ANY OF THE PEOPLE I’M TALKING ABOUT ARE, OR HOW THE BASICS OF MY CHOSEN INDUSTRY FUNCTION.

Now I have to start casting his coworkers as various D-list actors.

Hee! What I know about Toby's coworkers is that many of them are related and at least a few are redheaded, so I've currently cast them all as Conan O'Brian, which makes their complaints and ranting (which Toby complains and rants to me about) funnier.

This is how my interaction with my mother has worked for decades ^^ (except I don't actually imagine d-list actors, I just shut down thinking and do something around my flat). I actually do listen when the story is about my niece's newest cute doings and then do the terrible, great, aha noises for the stories of her neighbours and friends, some of whom I haven't seen since I finished university, some of whom I've never met.

Unfortunately it doesn't quite work vice versa, because she gets worried and upset easily or on the other hand dismisses my upset when I tell her about a particularly shitty work day. Oh well, with the years I learn what works ^^.

My mom and I sort of go "Yeah. Uh-huh." *nod* at each other when talking, but we accept that often neither of us is really listening. It just means that we can tell each other the same stories again and again. XD
