Hugos

So I am a supporting member of Worldcon/the Hugos this year, which means I get to vote on them! So ... while I'm busy reading the various works in the digital voter's packet and elsewhere, here's your chance to tell me which works you think should get/works you're voting for the Hugo this year.

List of nominees

I shall stalk this post! For it is relevant to my interests!

Also, I have read most of Cat Valente's Silently and Very Fast, and I do think it is really interesting and brain twisty. It wants to be read at least twice to get everything that's going on, but that's too much work and pushes it into the slightly too clever category for my tastes.

Most of the rest I don't have opinions on yet, except dramatic short form -- whatever is NOT Doctor Who will be getting my vote.

I need to catch up on reading. ... cuz I totally don't have enough of that to do right now. >.>

I am really, really hoping Seanan gets the best-related Hugo for her filk cd. It's absolutely lovely, and I'd enjoy seeing the best-related category expanding more.

Also, Digger for Best Graphic Story because it is AMAZING.

I suspect I'm voting for Digger, because I'd read what was out some years ago when the backfiles were thrown open temporarily (probably about the first 2 books worth?), and had been wanting to read more ever since. I finished it all a couple of weeks ago, and loved it. I'll be looking at the others just to be fair, though!

I'm not a voter, but I was very impressed with "The Man Who Ended History." It reminded me a bit of Ted Chiang.

Cool. I'm still reading through the short story and novelette categories and haven't got to the novellas yet (you'd think I'd read the LONGER ones first to ensure I had time to finish them all!) but so far Liu's short story has affected me the most, so I look forward to his longer one.

Ursula Vernon's Digger, which is finished, available in six collections AND online still. Stars a female WOMBAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Hyena's and a Shadow Child which adopts Digger as a mother for a time...

And there's Karen Lord's Redemption in Indigo, too.

The inclusion of Digger was what pushed me over the fence when it came to becoming a supporting member! XD

Hah, I should have checked your answers on the other comments first ^^.

I actually managed to buy the last three books somewhat cheaper because Sofawolf Press now has a German partner internet store. The first three books I imported from the US directly, because Amazon didn't have them at the time.

Nifty! While I hadn't bought any of the Digger graphic novels, I bought and enjoyed her novel Black Dogs. I've got the sequel, but it's been long enough since I read BD that I need to reread it to remind myself of the events in it before I can start the next one.

That's mostly driving home to me how much my tastes differ from "mainstream" fandom. Four of the best novel nominees are ones I've intentionally passed over (Leviathan Wakes looks interesting though, I'm grabbing the sample chapter).

I'm having a hard time getting into Among Others, but Toby just ate Deadline and its sequels up. I haven't tried Embassytown yet. I'll also be leaving Dance with Dragons alone, as we're watching the GoT series and I haven't decided whether to pick the books back up again or not (I bounced off about a third of the way into the first one). I'll give Leviathan a try, too, but haven't heard anything about it one way or the other.

The nominated episode of Community is amazing. In fact Community is amazing and I love it to pieces. It's consistently hilarious without ever going into embarassment-based or derogatory humor, has really good character progression over all three seasons, and just does things I've never seen TV do.

Huh. I haven't watched Community yet. Apparently I should. XD
