Well, now
I sent a Paypal payment off to someone and then logged into my bank to check my accounts and make sure I didn't need to transfer money over to the account it came from (I budget using a version of the envelope system that involves multiple bank accounts). And lo and behold, there on my debit card account--a card which I still held in my possession--were two charges from places I KNOW I hadn't gone to - a $30 charge to a club named Sheenas G Spot and a $325 charge to Fossil. Lovely.
Called my bank, and I love USAA in that they're giving me back ALL the money once the fraud report goes through channels (I've done this before and know how it works). The rep on the line with me said he could see two other charges that had been reversed, a $1 Paypal charge and a charge to a hotel called Ambrose. I suspect the reason the hotel didn't work is because they'd already cleaned out my account by then.*
I envision some guy picking someone up in a club, buying her an expensive purse to show off how loaded he was, then being ditched by her when the hotel turned down his card. At least I can only hope.** The card in question is now cancelled and shredded and a new one's on the way, and Toby's pulling out some cash for me to use until then.
* This is why I keep only a limited amount in the account I use for my debit card. The paycheck gets deposited into an account that I don't carry a card for.
** Chances are he'd actually bought several card numbers so it was only a momentary embarrassment. But I hope not.
