Poltergeist!

So last night we went to Target to load up on food for the PR team at A-Kon this weekend (supplying lunch and snacks for 10 people for 3 days). Toby and I also bought some Cokes for ourselves, and as we saw the 12-oz plastic bottles on sale at $10 for 3 8-packs, we got 3 8-packs.

They are nowhere to be found. We know we bought them - we have the receipt. We know that they were in the cart, as we only took 1 out for the clerk to scan and told here there were 2 others in the cart. We know they weren't in the cart, as when I put the cart up Toby called and asked if we'd gotten everything out of it and I looked and it was empty and said yes.

They're not at home, nor in the car. We left the water bottles we'd bought for the team in the car, and assumed we'd left the Cokes in there too, but when we checked there was nothing but water bottles there. The only explanation is that we left them in the cart, but...he unloaded the cart, asked if we'd gotten everything out of it, and I looked and said yes. We both remember that.

Unlikely, but could there have been a nearby cart that you looked at by mistake?

Unlikely, as he said it as I was walking away with the cart, holding its handle, and looking down at it.

Could they be (or rather, have been) in the parking lot next to the car? I.e., Toby could have put them there in order to load whatever was under them in the cart first, and them simply forgotten to load them.

We considered that -- it's a possibility, but it's likely we would have run over them as we backed out, or I might have seen them as I walked around the back of the car to the passenger side.

I'm guessing that they were in the cart and we both managed to just not see them. :/

Well, Coke bottles are red and Target carts are red, so that's certainly plausible. Or maybe it was new Invisible Coke.

Actualy, that sounds reasonable - you might ask Target if someone turned that in.

Nah, it's been long enough by now and we're in enough of a hurry (packing up for the con right now, and we'll be leaving before too long) not to worry about it. I ran by Kroger and picked up replacements so we won't be free of sugary caffeinated goodness. It's mostly the HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?! bit.
