Mello

Getting in a bit more fun-sketchy time before I have to buckle down and tidy up some loose ends in TEH SEKRIT PROJEKT.

A quick 20-min Photoshop sketch of Mello from Death Note (yes, dude in my icon), using the technique that [livejournal.com profile] ursulav uses where you're not allowed to erase: you just have to switch back and forth between black and white and scribble and layer them on top of each other.

Anyway, it was trying to work out a pose but this wasn't happeneing for me - I couldnt come up with a way to make the coposition dynamic in any way, so it gets to stay like this. Whee.

ETA: Try 2.

Second try, more dynamic, more of crazy!Mello, but ... overall still not workin' for me. Hrmph.

Working better for me. Still ... not quite there. Hrm.

Ahh, that third one. Mello!

Every time I read his name I desire sweets.
XD

What an interesting technique~! I rather like the first one, but maybe with smaller pupils. It is like he is inviting me for a big craaaazy hug!

I like the last one! Why hasn't he been drawn with a candy necklase yet? It'd be a match made in heaven.

:D Mello! I love that third one.

If you're doing the black and white thing, I'd suggest using OpenCanvas. It might be contrary to the whole purpose of the exercise, but it is, in my experience, a lot easier. Because of the way the layers work, white and the eraser tool are pretty much interchangeable (I've gotten into that habit of using white instead of the eraser) and it's just a handy lineart/doodling program.

White and the eraser are pretty much the same when workign in B&W in Phtooshop, and I just hit 'X' to make the white the active color, then X to make the black the active color - much faster than anything else. And you're supposed to get away from the mental idea of 'erasing' anything. XD Anyway, got Photoshop, Painter, Illustrator, Flash, ComicWorks, and ComicStudio - I don't need yet /another/ graphics program loaded on here (and I don't want to learn another one, more accurately). XD

I just posted a pencilled version of the third one to my LJ.
