telophase: My cat Sora, alert and somewhat nervous. (Cat - Sora alert)

State of the Sora

Poor Sora is overnight at the vet tonight. I took him in to rule out any medical problems for his, er, inappropriate elimination issues, and they asked me to leave him for the day because they needed to check his urine for blood and crystals. He has not yet, er, produced, so he's there overnight, poor kitty.*

Nefer has celebrated by sleeping all day undisturbed by him.

Anyway, the vet agreed that a few things odd about Sora's Issues might point to a medical issue (which might be an underlying issue exacerbated by the stress of the move): it doesn't seem like marking behavior as we've discovered pee puddles on plastic bags** in the kitchen and living room and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings cleaned poo up which was deposited overnight right near the food bowls. Yesterday we added a second litterbox in the laundry room, and when I brought him in there and put him in it, he squatted but it took him a really long time to begin to pee, and although we had no surprises left for us overnight, yesterday evening we discovered a puddle right next to the new litterbox. Although the rest of his behavior has been perfectly normal.

So ... Sora remains a Cat of Mystery, at least about the state of his mental and physical health. The vet gave him a bit of a painkiller (at the end of a Traumatic Vet Visit that involved a Most Undignified poking and prodding of a Most Intimate Nature), so that if peeing causes him pain, it should relieve that for the moment.

We shall see.

* I suspect I am more traumatized them him. They said I could drop by this afternoon and visit, but I don't want to get his hopes for going home up and then dash them.

** Yay for that choice!

Oh, man, I hope the vet figures out what's going on. Fingers crossed!

Shula was piddling on bags and other objects for some time when he had his bladder troubles last year, sometimes directly in front of the litterbox. I wouldn't be surprised if your cat got the kitty equivalent of Flomax, some antibiotics, and a prescription for specialized food.

Yeah. Part of me wants it all to be behavioral and him not to be sick, but part of me wants it to be due to an illness which can be fixed more easily than having to set out and re-train him to get used to the new house and the new litterboxes. Sigh.

He has expressed his opinion with pee a couple of times before - I know that when Toby and I moved in, Sora had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he was no longer the only man in my life. :) He peed on Toby's pillow once. We ended up spraying down the bed with that pheromone stuff for a month or so, and it seemed to work.

A Feliway dispenser may also be prescribed. The doctor told me that one of the major contributing causes of urinary inflammation in cats is stress. So that's the pheromone stuff there. Drs. Foster and Smith have it for pretty cheap, if tha thelps at all.

Yay, he's home now! She didn't mention Feliway, although she did mention stress being a potential cause, but it probably wouldn't be a bad thing to dig out our dispenser and get some refills.

Poor kitty! Poor kitty family!

I hope he's all better soon.

And he can't even be in a cage with a fuzzy thing to curl up on, because kitties in his condition sometimes pee on them, and they can't wring enough out of the fabric to analyze. So he has to be in a mesh-bottomed cage for the duration, which is of course tearing my heart up!

Yup, I'll be more traumatized than he is.

Sounds like UTI to me. My boy cat has a problem with them, so I am familiar with all these signs. I make sure he has lots of water, and for a long time fed the prescription food too. Recently I've found that food made of actual meats has similar effects and is cheaper (especially at Trader Joe's!), so they've been getting that.

He's home! Yup, pretty much - crystals in his urine. And the vet's noticed a correlation with the food we use and cats having this problem, so we get to switch. Oh joy!

Aww, poor Sora. Glad he's home.

Mine ended up afraid of the type of litter that had hurt him, too, so you might watch out for that -- if it seems like he's reluctant to go back to the box, you might need to switch litters too.

Good point. We'll keep an eye out for that.
