Whinging

Problem: Con director updates Facebook with things like room party notices and upcoming deadlines but not the actual website.

Solution: editorial comment removed Figure out some way to grab items posted to Facebook and post them as new posts in Wordpress.

Complication: Several plugins exist that grab Facebook content and display it in a sidebar, but nothing I can find that scrapes it to make new WP posts, and I'd rather keep all updates together as updates.

Action: Whine about it on LJ and DW instead of doing anything useful. (I suppose I could take one of the plugins and rip it apart to see how they do what they do, to start with... Hrm.)

(Also: cannot find a magazine-style layout that suits our needs. Woe is me; would rather not try to figure out how to code nifty advanced features and instead merely tweak layouts.)

awww. But shouldn't you lock this? If it's your own con you're talking about.

Considering that it's obvious that Facebook is updated while the site isn't, I think it's public knowledge already. :) I will, however, remove my editorial comment.

I endorse this move with the personal experience that when I have to work with people for a longer period of time, I really have to decide which problems to make a fuss about. I'll have to live with the result.

Sometimes I go all the way, though. One colleague hasn't greeted me for years now - I did it a year longer than he started with that and then I felt like an idiot and stopped greeting him, too. He's in this 50s and I'm in my 40s XD

Facebook. FEH. I hates it. (And I have nothing useful to suggest, because all the FB-related plugins I've seen really, really suck.)

I'm wondering if setting it up so she can log in with her Facebook account would go any way towards getting her to update the site instead of FB...

I was wondering if the suggestion of 'turn it around' (have them post to the web page, and use WP plug ins to mirror over to FB) would be feasible, or if it was more a user-preference issue.

That's what it's currently doing, which isn't working. As Amie says herself, she has her ways of doing things, and she likes them. That's why she still uses Microsoft Publisher to do her desktop-publishing needs. She updates Facebook because she knows how, and because she's on Facebook.

Which is why it nwould make things so much easier if I could just scrape the FB stuff and have it be posts. I've got it as a sidebar widget now, which isn't great as it only posts the title line, which is "Unknown" for a lot of them.

I had a brainstorm - find an automated spammer auto-blogger and the ConDFW Page RSS feed. Feedwordpress seems to work on my test install, although I need to wait an hour to see if it really will update once per hour.

If there are duplicate posts that I can't control then SO BE IT. At least for now. (I can tag it and categorize it "facebook post", but I wish I could retitle each piece to start with "Posted on Facebook: [orig title]". Perhaps I shall suggest that to the plugin creator.)
