Violette Market scents

Got my tester decants of Violette Market's Yule scents; thought I'd throw down quick first impressions while sniffing the vials as I'll never actually get around to doing full tests, and will need to decide before New Year's Day if I want to buy any bottles of these.

Ceryneian Hind
In Greek Mythology, the Ceryneian Hind was an enormous deer who lived in Keryneia, Greece. It was sacred to the Greek Goddess Artemis. It had golden antlers and hooves of bronze and it was said that it could outrun an arrow in flight.

Dark and golden amber woven among a tapestry of dried autumn leaves, brown suede leather, blond patchouli, winter branches, hazelnut shells, white chocolate musk, and white pepper dusted over newly fallen snow.

Hard to pick out components here. It's a unisex scent, I think, with an element of cold, which is probably a mint or a very subtle menthol. I can almost get the chocolate musk out of it, but everything else sort of blends together. I like it, but may not love it. Will have to try it on.

Christmas on the Champs-Élysées 2010
The quiet drift of falling snow, woodland branches decorated with white lights and red bows heralding the season. The warm glow of wintry windows framed in pink and yellow lights, sweet shoppes displaying an array of seasonal treats, frosted novelties, sugared fruits, and spiced confectioner's delights. The hustle and bustle of late-evening shoppers and the twinkle of crystallized ice.

Vanilla absolute, bourbon vanilla, black orchid, lemon sugar, red raspberries, ripe strawberries, olive wood, tonka bean, benzoin, vanilla bean, white cane sugar, almond paste, pignoli cookies, white chocolate ganache, hazelnut cream, cinnamon bark, grated nutmeg, cinnamon leaf, and dark rich cocoa.

Candy and cookies, with a faint spray of soft lemon above it all. Of course, for me it's not going to evoke Paris at all unless it's got the smell of rotisserie chicken in it, since that's my overwhelming scent-memory of Paris, but I still like it.

Ellepiger
In Scandinavian folklore, Ellepiger are the alder tree girls who are extremely beautiful in face but have hollow backs. They dance around trees at night, luring young men to come join them and never be heard of again.

Black amber, cherry smoked alder wood, almond shells, wild black plums, forest apples, sun-warmed acorns, golden amber dust, red carnation, birch twigs, cinnamon hazelnuts, and honeyed cedar wood.

First note: freshly cut apple. Then it gets modulated by something that's almost baked-goodsy, but the apple comes back.

Fimbulwinter
In Norse Mythology, Fimbulwinter is the immediate prelude to the end of the world, Ragnarok. Fimbulwinter is three successive winters without any intervening summer, no melting of ice, and no reprieve to the endless fall of snow.

Lofty white flakes, cool winter air, pale pink winter blooms, and a wispy brush of crystallized vanilla honey.

Soft, icy mint.

Fireside Chat
A roaring fire in a vast circular hearth, roasted chesnuts, brown sugar, honeyed cinnamon, worn leather chairs warmed by the fire's light, and crackling wood.

Leather and a bit of wood. It's more of a worn-leather-jacket than a tannery-leather scent.

Huldra
In Scandinavian folklore, Huldra is a seductive shape shifting forest creature who can appear to be a stunningly beautiful, sometimes naked, woman with long hair; though from behind she has a hollow back like an old tree trunk, and a fox’s tail.

Creamy gardenia, plum blossom, fir needle, black amber, cedar leaf, birch branches, green mosses, cold forest loam, and pink forest violet.

Gardenia with a hint of evergreen. I actually quite like it, although I'll have to decide if it's worth my nose closing up a bit when I sniff, as I'm mildly allergic to evergreens.

Mrs. Fezziwig's Eggnog
A tipsy infusion of creamy eggnog, warmed buttered rum, nutmeg, cinnamon stick, and sheer golden vanilla musk.

A soft cinnamon and something - it does smell like something you'd want to drink!

Niflheim
In Norse Mythology, Niflheim is the land of mist and ice.

Powdery white snow, frigid glacial boulders encased in thick ice, dark green Reindeer Moss, damp soil, black tea leaf, white mint, and blue-tinged mist.

Soil and snow. The snow resolves into a haze of mint over the soil. Intriguing. Will have to try it, and the soil scent evokes memories of being a young kid and liking the smell (and taste! I was young!) of dirt, but I'm not sure I want to smell like it. Depends what it does on my skin.

Nøkken
In Scandinavian folklore, Nøkken is a shape shifting fresh water creature who lures his victims out onto thin ice and then draws them down to the deep depths of the freezing water. He often appears as a beautiful white horse with opal black eyes, the mane of the horse appears like shimmering mist over the frozen water.

Thick ice, frozen buttercotch, vanilla bean infused cream, sugared white tea, peppermint leaf, blond woods, gray spearmint, and ice crystals covering wild blueberries.

Minty butterscotch. Love the butterscotch, but have had Bad Experiences with mint in the past.

Oaxacan Hot Chocolate
Mexican drinking chocolate, rich vanilla cream, cinnamon leaf, coffee, and a hearty dusting of brown sugar, nutmeg, and pink pepperberries.

Mmmm, peppery cocoa. Made me want to try it on [livejournal.com profile] myrialux, but his first impression was "Euw. Chemicals," and when he let me put it on him, his skin immediately ate it and all I smelled was the soap he'd washed his hands with. He smelled a bit of the chocolate still, but wasn't that impressed with it. Darn.

ETA: He wandered back in, and I re-sniffed, and compared to his non-scented wrist. The soap is partially from the Oaxacan Hot Chocolate. :D Anyway, don't love it on him.

Rübezahl
In German folklore, Rübezahl is a giant, gnome, or mountain spirit. When encountering good people he is friendly, he teaches them medicine and gives them presents. If someone derides him, however, his revenge is severe. He also contols the Northern weather, sending lightning and thunder, fog, rain, and snow from the mountains above. His physical appearance resembles a monk in a gray frock holding a string instrument in his hand (the storm harp), and walking so heavily that the earth trembles around him.

Blustering winter wind carrying: golden vanilla, sweet spearmint, Madagascar vanilla bean, Greek watermint, white chocolate, peppermint candies, cocoa-infused vetiver, cedarwood, and honeyed black pine.

Minty vetiver with a dusting of evergreen. It's not a really strong, herby vetiver, it's one I almost like. But only almost.

Saint Paul's Churchyard
Snow-covered mounds of the long departed. A cold wintry blanket of newly fallen snow, warm balsam twigs, dry cedar, ivory sandalwood, rose-infused golden amber, frost-covered blackberry, cinnamon spiced fig, frozen pear, bergamot, and winter citrus.

I rather like this one, too. A cold, golden scent, almost like an ambery apple.

Seraphim
Seraphim means "burning ones". In Christian, Islamic, and Jewish literature, the seraphim were celestial beings with two or three pairs of wings who guard the throne of God. In Christian angelology, seraphim are the highest-ranking in the hierarchy of angels. They were often referred to as the "firey ones" and the colors pink and red were used in their reference.

Pink carnation, bourbon vanilla, gardenia petals, allspice, nutmeg, frankincense, Madagascar clove, vanilla cream, white amber, balsam peru, cinnamon bark, and the flutter of angel wings.

Bourbon. Bourbon and then cinnamon. I put a dot on my arm to see what it was like after the bourbon and cinnamon wore off, and so far it smells like cinnamon. It may be an hour or two before the cinnamon wears off (it's a strong, volatile component that overwhelms quite a lot of other components, as I've found in my own scent-mixings!)

I actually sort of like it, however.

ETA: About 30 minutes later, and the cinnamon is starting to let other scents through, although they're all perfumed with cinnamon. I rather like it. Subtle, though. Toby sniffed it and said that what he mostly smelled was Stephanie. Will consider a bottle.

Snowshoe
Snow-covered forest fir and cedar, frozen vanilla mint, maplewood, tree amber, leather lacings, the crunch of snow underfoot, and the quietness of the woods in winter.

Another soft, icy mint. Does put me in mind of the woods in winter, but I don't think I like it enough for a bottle.

The Ginger House
Gingerbread cookies and dark ginger cakes ribboned with peppercorn cream, crystallized candied ginger, sweet cinnamon leaf, molasses, nutmeg, maple sugar, Madagascar clove, ginger spice, jewel-toned fruit candies, vanilla frosting, and chimney smoke carried on a snow-filled wind.

OMG GINGER. Not the fresh ginger that turns into Lemon Pledge on me, but the spicy, powdered, peppery ginger of gingerbread. I rather like this, although it kind of makes me hungry. I tried this one on, and as it ages, it turns into ginger cookies. Mmmmmm, ginger cookies. I may actually have found a foody scent I like!

ETA: Ginger cookies. Still like it. Unfortunately, Toby gets a short, quick, momentary headache when he sniffs. Darn. DO not want headachy Toby, so I guess this one is not to be.

Turkish Delight 2010

Almond paste, crushed hazelnuts, raspberry jam, lemon custard, peach rose jelly, sugared walnuts, honey musk, a thick dusting of white powdered sugar, and sweet candied apricots brushed with pink rosewater.

Sweet jellied candy - reminiscent of sugar-dusted gumdrops with a faint, faint hint of rose.

Want 2010

A reprise of unquenching gluttony. Thick sweet cream, rich Bourbon vanilla bean, plump blackberries dripping in dark honey, and luxurious golden patchouli.

Sweet, warm, soft, patchouli. Interesting ... may have to try this one on when I don't have other scents on to see how it changes on me. It's not head-shop patchouli, but a nicer one.

Winter Morning
The delicious scent of cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven, complete with spiced cinnamon layers, and sweet vanilla frosting.

Doesn't smell fresh out of the oven to me - I get a whiff of Generic Baked Good first before it settles down to a soft cinnamon-roll scent.

argh. you.

You have gotten me hooked on BPAL.

I'm planning on going to the full moon event on Tuesday... any requests? They're selling a champagne series only available at this event, so... y'know...

^__^
