State of the computer

Computer: fully backed up. (I hadn't done a full backup in a long time: we've got a system set up to back up the most important files, but it can't handle my full hard drive.)

Wipe and reinstall: postponed until next weekend, as I priced Win7 at various prices, and figured out what I needed* and what it cost at various places, including with academic discount. So it's ordered. And of course there's now the Waiting Period in which the site decides if I am academic enough to be worthy, and the odd problem of not all schools being eligible for the super discounts on some software if they haven't done--

--and dear god exactly as I was typing that sentence the store sent me the official notice that I was eligible and they would be shipping it shortly! Woo!

They've also got a sweet deal on, shall we say, a popular word-processing and more package for download that I shall be purchasing once we've got my computer up and running again, as I've been making do with a much, much earlier version that is not exactly legit and it's old enough now that it's pretty awful to use. :D

* Win7 Ultimate, which was in the sweet spot between academic price and having what I needed, which is the ability to run an XP emulator so I can actually use my ancient scanner. Which I can't give up because it is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than any consumer-grade scanner today.

Yay!

I've had good luck with my Win7 upgrade. It takes a little getting used to, because it's visually/behaviorally different from XP, but in general I've quite liked some of the new behaviors and features. Good luck!

Yay! I haven't had much experience with it yet - we're upgrading to Win7 at work, but I'm not yet done because I use some older non-Win7-compliant software that we need to purchase upgrades for before I can upgrade. But the few times I've encountered it while installing software on other people's computers, I've loved the ability to run/install as ad admin user without having to log out and log in with admin credentials. It's made life so much easier.

Microsoft finally got it right with Win7. There's a few quirks that take some getting used to, but overall it's worked very smoothly, it's far more easily customizable, and it's generally a vast improvement on XP or especially Vista.
