I'm not sure whether or not to call the first one a fail or a win, due to how this editor is now finding out how the internet is not fond of unfounded egotism.
As for the second link.... fail. Deviantart is probably the king of 'missing the point'. How hard would it be to just go 'unspecified'? Not everyone wants their gender to be known ON THE INTERNET. Also, I've run into nokari before- he seemed to make it his job to tell anyone who wrote a suggestion in the suggestions forum that 'why the heck would anyone want that?!' or how useless a suggested feature would be. Because, you know, god forbid someone post a suggestion in a suggestion forum.
I can see what is going on with deviantArt. They want that field for two reasons: 1) so other pages will know what pronouns to use, and 2) so their marketing and ad spaces can sell and serve ad views based on gender.
They'd be better served with having a "pronouns" drop down with a male/female/ambiguous set of options and a separate "gender" field where people can type in whatever text they like and then let their ad service use that text in a matching algorithm. There's no good reason to limit it the way they have.
Well, once they figure out that transpeople spend money too, they can make another category to sell ads to, and then "good business practices" will force their hand. It'll be like leaving money on the table.
What? People other than the mainstream typical exist and buy stuff? It can't be!
(Apparently, as of last night, they're relented and added "Other." Which I've gone and change my gender to, partly in sympathy for my trans friends and partly because I hate getting ads targeted at women.)
