Yargh! I've been playing Civ Rev Lite on my iTouch, and being glad that it forces me to play only short games. It's kept me from buying the full version. But Civ V. *grabby hands* Woe!
My scouts discovered Krakatoa, which made my citizens very happy as it is a Natural Wonder. And if I build a city next to it, I get some sort of bonus.
Civ IV hated me. I don't know why, but it was THE most frustrating thing ever. (or maybe I'd just become too dependent on the infinite gold crack code I had for Civ I on floppy disk back in the day. Ahh... cheat codes... :))
1) turn off Barbarians 2) make it a huge world with either snaky continents or an archipelago 3) limit my competition to 5 or 6 other civs.
and occasionally, when I got tired of it,
4) check the Always Peace checkbox.
If I didn't check Always Peace, I tended to pick my opponents myself to make sure Montezuma and Isabella weren't playing, because they are dirty warmongers and drive me nuts.
I've been playing Civ since Civ II, which is still my favorite in a nostalgic way--those camel caravans really got me, especially as I was running over them with tanks.
I loved playing North Africa on the original board game because your resources were so scarce that you'd fall way behind for the first half of the game, which meant everyone would forget about you. So you could carefully husband your resources and gain oceanfaring tech with nobody noticing and then, about 3/4 of the way through the game, loose the Barbary Pirates upon the world.
bwahahah. Brilliant! I've never had a large enough group together (er, more than two? *facepalm*) to get a really good game going. At some point, though...
Empathy! Although for me it's the release of Final Fantasy 14. (I keep wailing, "But I'm not an MMORPG person!", but the combination of being able to get my own chocobo and being able to light people on fire when they bother me is too tempting.)

It's just as wacky as Civ IV, in its way. :)

It's so amusing when they send cavalry against tanks. Like, um, Poland in WWI...

How Spain's pikemen were kicking my riflemens ass is a mystery, though. Apparently they had a really lagged reload time. >.< doh.
