I chewed on this for a couple days and finally figured out what bothered me-- one is the assumption that the Japanese market should inherently do what Jake wants them to do. They handle the whole market differently, and I'm not sure they care that much that 'The World' could be reading more of their stuff. And second is the lack of understanding that some of the problems in the manga industry are inherent to book publishing, like translation issues. I was just reading something about how translators of Grown-Up Fiction are about the worst paid people on the publishing scale.
Having said that, he's got some interesting points.

I'm like, uh...drawing a doujinshi won't help me share interesting manga that are never going to get published in English. XD
