Snowpocalypse!

We got three inches of snow!

*pauses to let THE ENTIRE NORTHEAST laugh hysterically*

Down here in North Texas, the city isn't equipped to salt/sand the roads this extensively, so it tends to close everything down. TCU is no exception and I've got a snow day, although I live close enough that I could have driven in if I really needed to.

Dude, my friend in TX emailed to say they'd lost power. (I guess she used her smartphone.) I was like, "...you lost electricity because of 3 inches?"

Yep. And we're getting more this weekend! That muffled sound you hear is me crying into my pillow.

I survived the San Antonio Blizzard of '85.

All one inch of it. The city shut down.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It must have been horrible!

I was in San Antonio for the Ice Storm of Spring '89.

I understand how three inches can cripple an area that's not used to it. OTOH, I just walked along a path cut through piles of snow as tall as I am for my coffee so there is a certain winter weariness setting in.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get that much when I lived in South Dakota, but I remember drifts up to my waist in places.

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The path was mostly knee to waist high, but still.

I think you could defend your fort from there!

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, if I were ten this would be the best thing ever! The snow plows create forts for you! I have already picked three locations on the apartment building's grounds from which to launch full scale snowball assaults.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm planning on bundling up shortly and going outside, although I won't be out there for long as I have no closed-toe shoes I can wear (arthritis). The walkway and side patio are warm enough that most of the snow is a very thin layer, and I'll be careful of ice.

I shall throw a snowball, for the sake of my mostly-snow-free childhood.

Some things simply must be done. Ooh! I wonder if there will be a snowball fight at the con this weekend...

I was watching TV around 6:30 this morning and the newscasters seemed surprised that TCU had decided to close, especially since then at least (not sure about now) Ft. Worth and Dallas schools were still going to be open. Looks like it was a good call. UNT and Tarleton are open. I tried to drive in to work from my small town (where it is barely snowing and temp is 34) but had to turn around a little more than halfway as road conditions were awful between here and S-ville (where the temp is 32 -- and it's always colder in between the two towns). Unfortunately, I am having to take a day of unplanned vacation.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
They may be making up for the time a couple of years ago when whoever it is in charge of closing down went out at 5:30 and saw it was perfect and didn't realize that the ice storm was scheduled to hit at 6:30. And didn't get around to closing campus until 7:30 or 8, after lots of people had already braved icy roads to get there.

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Snowing hard here now and it's sticking to the pavement. UNT is closing at noon and S-ville schools at 1 PM but my employer is still open so far. Waiting to submit the online vacation request in case we close early too.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Good plan. I always thought it was ridiculous for employers not giving these sorts of days off to people who scheduled vacation days.

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, three inches of snow would totally shut my city down!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like we might get up to six before the close of day. THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly you should go back to bed and not come out until it's through.

Assuming you've already stocked in food enough for what is clearly a winter siege.

[identity profile] janni.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Our newspaper headline today was "Epic blizzards renew assault on East Coast."

They're clearly enjoying this way too much.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my subconscious picked up on it - I slept in and woke up out of a frenetic dream about a dark, powerful storm that had blown evil ghosts in, and I was struggling to get my camera's battery working because that would somehow shoot lasers at them.

I don't know about the entire northeast, but this corner of it would kill for even three inches right about now. Our expected big storm yesterday just fizzled right out. :-/

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-02-11 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on down, there's plenty for the taking!

You're welcome to as much of DC's snow as you could possibly want!

I got an email yesterday that said due to the forecast of rain and the probability of temperatures dropping below zero, we might have a snow emergency today. (We didn't.)

The weather says there'll be a mix of rain and snow and possibly sleet tonight. I am so not looking forward to driving home, as I will be one of like three people on the road that understands that when the roads are icy, it takes longer to stop, and that that means you may want to drive a little slower than usual. The speed limit, say.

Laugh I will not! You realize that we have a 50% chance of a visit from your storm on Monday? I can see the evil thing on the weather radar ... it's a little north of where the last two storms were when they were at that longitude

D-:

The stack of snow that straddles the property line between our next-door neighbors' lawn and ours is now about as tall as I am (5 ft. 6 in.) - that's where we've been throwing the snow from around the Mr.'s car.

haha, i don't live in the northeast, but we got 8 inches and things sure didn't shut down for that. michigan only shuts down once things get past like... a foot or so.

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2010-02-12 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but you folks are more experienced driving in this stuff, and your towns and highway departments tend to have more equipment to deal with it. Doesn't snow here enough to make it worthwhile to spend money on that kind of equipment. My cousin, a pilot who now lives near DFW, grew up in Rochester, NY, and he doesn't even own a snow shovel any more.
