As I'm in a bit of a silly mood, I'd like to work on two playlists I've got. So:

1) recs for good covers of "House of the Rising Sun"? I've got versions by Muse, John Otway, and a disco-y version whose artist is not credited on my track (it was from an anthology album)

2) recs for covers of Britney Spears songs? I don't especially like *her* versions, but quite often the songs themselves are not bad, and when covered by people with talent and not over-produced, enjoyable. And I've got, like, three of them and figured I could make a decent playlist out of it. :)

Bonus points if said songs are available on iTunes. I'd go poke around iTunes right now myself, but I am at work. :)

2. You know about the Richard Thompson "Oops," yes?

I love this cover *so* much.

Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester also did a wonderful cabaret cover of "Oops". I don't have iTunes, but it's well-findable on Youtube.

Richard Thompson (Brit folk/rock guitar god) does a rather chilling cover of "Whoops I Did It Again" which I think is on iTunes

Thanks!

Exactly the one I was going to recommend.

Heartily thirded!

As for the other, I'd suggest Snakefarm (http://annadomino.imnotafraidofyou.com/snakefarm-bio.html)'s "Rising Sun" -- actually, I'd recommend their whole album Songs From My Funeral for unconventional takes on folk standards:

I wanted to rec that and couldn't remember the group's name!

Ahmet & Dweezil Zappa have a cover of "Hit Me Baby (One More Time)" I quite like. XD And Local H has a cover of "Toxic" I also like. I don't know if they're iTunes-available, though. I find something very interesting/entertaining in hearing female pop songs covered by men.

Cool, thanks!

My favoritest awful song is a cover of "Milkshake" by Chance, whose (male) singer starts off by saying "Under normal circumstances, this is completely unacceptable." XD

LOL!

If you can't find the two Spears covers I mentioned, let me know and I'll hook you up.

Here's Doc Watson and Clarence Ashley's version of House of the Rising Sun, very old-timey sounding.

Tracy Chapman did a terrific "House of the Rising Sun," but it might be hard to find. I found it on an Elektra Records anniversary compilation when I was a teenager, and that was not recently. Oddly enough I was just thinking of it earlier today.

It's not exactly "House of the Rising Sun," but have you heard the cover of "Amazing Grace" done to the tune of "House" by the Blind Boys of Alabama? Insanely good. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZJ-kLKut9E) (the link is to a youtube performance)

Ahmet & Dweezil Zappa's Hit Me Baby One More Time. (AMV, using Utena, but hey, the video is hilarious)

The first version of "House of the Rising Sun" I ever heard was the one done by the Animals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQp6Jcdk) some time in the 1960s. It's my definitive version, as it was one of the five records we had in my college common room centuries ago.

There is also a rather frightening Weimar Germany version of "Oops I did it again" here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH49M86Nb98).

Sorry to be a drive-by commenter... I popped over from DeviantArt, and happen to have recently been infatuated with a version of House of the Rising Sun by Eric Burden that's used in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g5Ji2u6cd4). Figured I'd give it a plug. :)
