(no subject)

I just have to post a few panels here to explain why I love how CRACK-ADDLED the writer and artist for Death Note are.

This is a little bit of characterization for Near, spread out over chapters 63 and 64. No spoilers because I erased all the dialogue and deleted any panels that might be the least bit spoilery.

First, we see Near amusing himself while in [SPOILER] with a simple game of darts:

Next we get an entire page, with a bunch of stage business. In the first panel, someone's handing Near a dart - Near's pretty important and doesn't even ahve to get up from his chair to get the darts himself.

Over the course of the page, we learn that Near is a lousy shot. Rather nice to see a super-genius kid who isn't good at something. XD

We think this is the punchline - that Near's a lousy shot. But wait! There's more!

In the next chapter, we see just how lousy a shot he really is. XD

OK, sure, he could be over there picking darts out of the wall, but dude - one of the stern-looking adults was handing darts to him earlier. Do we really think that Near would bother to pick the darts up himself, in that case?

Anyway: CRACK.

Maybe it's a magnetic dart-board and someone has switched the polarity of the darts? XD

And he hasn't figured that out yet? Man, he's gonna be pissed. XD

He got tired of darts and switched to something else in chapter 66, but the sequence involved with that which tells you a lot about his character is so spoiler-laden that not even erasing the dialogue would do anything, so I can't post it in good conscience just yet, because nobody on my friendslist would be able to read it. XD

Placed in white to avoid spoilers. To see, highlight below.

I can now see why you were so fascinated with those reference hair-curling photos. XD

White for spoilers.

No kidding about the hair-curling pics. :) I'm looking at those two pages going - hey, I think I can recognize those exact poses! OTOH, it's not like there's too many things you can do with your hands while twirling your hair.

Hair-curling's just one of those universal but sadly overlooked human tendencies, like cracking your knuckles or playing with the phone cord while you're chatting on the phone. XD

Or constantly munching on a chocolate bar? :)

There's something almost Fruedian about that. XD

Hee hee! That's the bad thing about scanlations-- I hardly ever catch this stuff unless someone points it out.

I've started to really look for it, after I discovered that Mello was strongarming a kid and bouncing a ball off the head of another in 58 or whatever it was. Obata drops in a lot of that stuff - chapter 66 is really good with that, but ... spoilerrific, so I can't post it for you guys yet. :)

Delurking to let you know you're responsible for my current Death Note addiction. Crack is an understatement.

Thank you.

XD You're welcome! Spread the crack love!
