Jack Frost, volume 1

You see, Mr. JinHo Ko, the problem with basing your character designs, panel angles, weapons, and occasionally even art style on Hellsing is that you need to be better than Hellsing in order to stop the reader continually comparing your manhwa with Hellsing and coming up lacking.

Your manhwa, sir, is no Hellsing.

(If I remember to, scans will be coming later TO PROVE IT.)

(Although I have to admit it's kind of amusing the way one character gets decapitated in every chapter. But it's not amusing enough to make up for the lack of being Hellsing and the confusing storyline.)

I skimmed the first chapter on OM. I have no idea what's going on.

One would think that "your story should not constantly remind the readers of another, much better story" would be an easily understood rule of writing.

(This is the same manhwa that combined a decapitation scene with an upskirt shot, right? For the purposes of humor? Gaaaaah.)

I was thinking the same thing. I remember seeing the title on a scanlation site and going 'i know this has nothing to do with Megaten stuff but damn it i need to look at it'.

Then I got to that panel and just sort of went.... "OH JOHN RINGO NO"

I think the universe now owes us a manga that is about the Megaten Jack Frost, just to make up for the awfulness of this one.

(Also because it would be one of the cutest things ever, but that goes without saying.)

Inexplicably, I completely missed all the upskirt shots when flipping through it in the bookstore. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

I couldn't get past the first five PAGES! The cover is great-looking, but I opened it and it was just blargh and nonsensical paneling. I went for dumbfluff yaoi instead to be my tachiyomi timekiller.

Here, to spare you some scanning time: c 1-3

Thank you! Expect a post later.

I flipped through it at the bookstore a week or so ago based on the cover, but couldn't tell what was going on.

The cover is awesome and looks like nothing else in the book. I call shenanigans, like the doujinshi circles who put their best art on the cover and use stick figure porn for the rest of the book!

There's a full-page panel near the end where the artist was copying channeling Hellsing, which is not bad. Unfortunately, all it makes me do is want to read Hellsing.

I picked it up because a superficial flip through had me going "Ah, I like the crazy-ass smile on the titular character's face. I'll give it a go." COMPLETELY MISSING the upskirt shots.

It doesn't get any better. Apparently, if you die sometimes you end up in this giant alternate world that's also a school, where the various districts are at war with each other, and the main character is a Mirror Image, which isn't really explained except that she's Special for some reason - and the one thing that's done right is that she's pissed off that being Special doesn't mean she gets any powers or get to be respected or anything. She can't die, and her blood can help heal other people, and that's about it.

So it's Hellsing meets Bleach meets Afterschool Nightmare?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read Afterschool Nightmare, so I'll just say ... yes.

Even the Amazon reviews are talking about the Hellsing ripoff!
