telophase: (Cats - Sora and Nefer)

A-Kon Report. Short form.

Exhausted. Sales sucked - in the art show I made about half of what I usually make, and about 2/3 of what I usually make at the table. Had a great spot, but still made more last year in the sucky spot.* Need to focus on CUTE for stuff, as that what's seemed to be selling like mad elsewhere. I found a place online that does inexpensive 1" buttons, so will think about creating some simple CUTE designs for them.**

Took lots of photos and some random video with narration. May or may not get that up soon - I'd rather just sit and read tonight.

Got [personal profile] meganbmoore safely off back to her hometown, with directions to the nearest Half-Price Books, where I hear she made a serious dent in their stock.

I have a very needy kitten right now, who is all OMG YOU WERE GONE AND THEN YOU WEREN'T HERE AND SOMEONE ELSE WAS HERE*** AND NOW YOU'RE HERE AND YOU KEEP LEAVING**** AND YOU'RE BACK AND IT WAS TOTALLY AWFUL. Nefer is more classy about it, merely meatloafing within ten feet of wherever I happen to be at the time.

[livejournal.com profile] myrialux said OMG YOU WILL SEE STAR TREK after he came back from Houston and seeing it with friends, so we did the lunchtime showing at the Studio Movie Grill. I liked it a lot. Winced a bit at the physics, which I expected as it's Trek, and winced a bit at the gender issues, which I'd expected as I'd seen talk here and there on LJ about that, but overall it was enjoyable. :)

* OK, I didn't have [personal profile] rachelmanija shilling for me this year, but it's more than just my lousy selling skills. :D

** As I'm sending them out to be printed by someone else, these are all going to be originals, not fanart.

*** My current couch is not suitable for crashing on, so Megan stayed here while I crashed at [livejournal.com profile] myrialux's place. It's conveniently close. :)

**** For dinner. And lunch. After three days of eating out of a cooler, I want food BROUGHT TO ME, dammit.

Your couch is actually slightly bigger than the one I sleep on at my brother's! (Well, shorter, but wider.)

I think being surrounded by the power of CUTE was a big factor in sales. When I was watching, it seemed people were making a beeline for Matsumoto/Haku/Matt/Naruto Potter and then veering off at the last second because they saw CUTE. That, and one neighbor had a killer salesman...

I shall post a picture of loot later, and you can tell me if I bought anything you unloaded!

You can actually sleep on my couch if you take the ottoman currently underneath the computer desk and place it at the end without the arm - I've done it before. XD But it's just as easy to go over to Toby's.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
I might have been able to eke out a few more sales, but I think the key problem is the horrific state of the economy.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think what you'd have been able to do was get people's attention away from TEH CUTE at the tables on either side. They'd come straight for my table, drawn in by Matsumoto's boobs* or Naruto/HP or Matt**, then at the last minute spot the keychains and badges on one side or the hats on the other and veer away.

Sold very few books - I need to double-check that it was 4 I sold before sending you your half. Strangely, there were no roving bands of yaoi-seeking people dropping by the table at this con: you know, the ones who'd grab the book, then look at us and say "Is this yaoi?" before even opening it or reading the back, because their primary concern was for boykissing, rather than story, plot, character, etc. Had 2 or 3 ask for the PBR sequel. :)

* She doesn't sell. But she magnetically draws people in.

** Before I sold out of him on Saturday morning. Darn. Needed more.

[identity profile] wintersweet.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, sorry about sales. :/

I had multiple instances of lolarious zero eye contact in the huge artists' alley (it was an entire frigging ballroom) at Fanime. So much so that when one table actively greeted me I was like "OMG WAY TO GO YOU GUYS" and they were like "eep is that sarcasm?" hee.

Star Trek...there was ONE physics yay moment when the geeks in my aisle all turned and looked at each other and went "did you hear that?!" Oh well.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! I didn't get much of a chance to go around the AA, mostly because I wasn't doing well enough to be able to spend money. XD

Oh, randomly fyi - in the back of Mushishi 7, there's an explanation of their choices for translation and not-translation of honorifics in one of the chapters. There's four characters involved, and they translated one to "My lady Tanyuu" (the character who's a servant/teacher/ish person to Tanyuu), and left another one as "Tanyuu-dono," (soneone in a feudal relationship to her) and then left the "-san" off when Ginko speaks, because he just "-san"s everyone.

Ooh, interesting, thanks!

dont' feel bad. Sales are sucking at ALL cons everywhere. Conduit was this weekend and for the first time *ever* we actually had to pull art into the auction house to HAVE an auction (instead of letting people silent bid it into auction). People who normally sell out were taking home at least half their panels. it was pretty bad.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to keep reminding myself that as I'm doing more cons this year, I'm actually making more money overall, it's just that each individual con is worse than usual. XD But I shall try to harness the power of TEH CUTE for Tokyo in Tulsa and see what happens.

FYI, I keep meaning to tell you: part of the reason ConDFW's art sales sucked so badly was that the lighting in the rooms we used for the art show was AWFUL HORRIBLE NO GOOD VERY VERY BAD. People who normally sell out weren't selling many, and people who normally sell just a few had no sales. We are looking at possibilities for next year - right now, it'll probably be getting a four-lamp setup for our panel rounds, so that each two-panel bay has one light - because we don't want that happening again. (Unfortunately moving to another space is not an option as this point.)

[identity profile] vestaka.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
ahah yeah I had a feeling it was something like that. Quite a few shows are having that problem. What we did is get these little square yellow lights (I forget what they're called, you get them in hardware stores, for constructionO and clamp them to the top metal supports of our panel frames. Then we bounce the light *up* off of the ceiling. It illuminates huge sections of the room then.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-02 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I'll pass that on to the staff, thanks! :D

I threw some kanzashi into the print shop, but never got a chance to get back to the show and check it out, and found that my display box had been shoved all the way to the far end of the print shop table, in the darkest part of the entire room, so it wasn't exactly a surprise that they'd not managed to sell at all. XD

I looked for you on Sunday and I couldn't find you. Where were you hiding?

Sorry your sales sucked.

Island D, on the side facing the entrance doors to the hall. :)

On a cheerier note, do you have any amusing stories about the successor to Shirtless Renji-cosplayer?

Namely the catboy guy mentioned in this post:

http://meganbmoore.livejournal.com/999687.html

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry - I never saw him. :)

[identity profile] seawolf10.livejournal.com 2009-06-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Aw. I was hoping for amusing tales of some terrified guy being chased around by hordes of fangirls.

I probably should have realized the answer before asking the question -- you'd have mentioned that if you saw it.
