Via a coworker, a living library, basically a collection of volunteers that library patrons can "check out" for 20 minutes at a time to talk to.

Wow. That's a really neat concept and one that I could certainly see helping to break down barriers. It's easier to hate a concept than a person.

If you want to know what being an immigrant is like, can't you... make friends with an immigrant? Twenty minutes spent talking to one person, what can it really mean? I suppose it's better than nothing, but.

Not EVERY immigrant. And not if you go into the conversation expecting answers to all of your questions.

Thinking about it some more, though... it's baby steps. Learn from the experiences of a willing representative first, before you try your luck at the grocery store.

Exactly. It's really hard for a lot of people to take that step out of their comfort zone, and anything that can help that is good.
