I worked as an enumerator for the last census, tracking down and interviewing people who hadn't turned in their forms. The work was, on various occasions, eye-opening, thought-provoking, boring, frustrating, and on one occasion terrifying. (I was interviewing a guy, and some other guy walked into his trailer, and the temperature dropped like ten degrees and they were just staring daggers at each other. Every hair on the back of my neck was saying GET OUT GET OUT NOW. Which I should have done -- stupidly, I finished the last five questions on the form before fleeing.)
