[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija! Food porn manga! Oishinbo, Volume 1 (Oishinbo: a la Carte) With more to come!

I bought vol. 1 at the bookstore today+6999999999999999999999999999999555555555555555555555666666666666666666666666q

CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED

Anyway, I bought vol. 1 at the bookstore this evening and am about to read it. Apparently the original series ran over 100 volumes, and these are cherry-picked adventures from it. Basic plot: journalist and cynic Yamaoka Shiro is assigned to oversee the creation of the Ultimate Meal. His estranged father is a world-renowned gourmet who has disowned his son. Hilarious antics ensue as Yamaoka and his colleagues pursue the Ultimate Meal.

I read Oishinbo v1 a few weeks back, it is cracktacular in that food-porn kind of way. I definitely recommend it.

I'm halfway through and groovin' on the way Yamaoka and his dad keep getting pitted against each other and the ABSOLUTE SERIOUSNESS with which everyone takes the food. XD

It gets slightly more insane from there and thus, better. Also the fact that they have ABSOLUTE SERIOUSNESS with those pompadours and sideburns makes it that much more special.

Whenever I look at pics of London and see both the giant Girkin and the building not too far from it, I am reminded of a story.

See, the Girkin is now the tallest building in London, but it used to be the other building that's not too far from it. It turns out, according to the tour that I was on, that these rival buildings were built by two rival architects that used to be best friends but now bitterly hate each other.

And thus, they build really tall buildings to spite each other.

It's good. Because of the cherry-picking, there's little continuity apparent, so it feels like a sitcom and you have to rely on the notes in the back that say "Yamaoka is married to his colleague by now," and you miss the chapter where he gets assigned the whole Ultimate Meal thing, but as food porn, it's most excellent.
