Via [livejournal.com profile] tammylee: cultural differences in politeness. The comments are full of other examples.

I love group discussions on that sort of thing! Even between families of the same background and location, the norms are all over the map. I remember my shock when I first met my now-husband's parents -- my parents were quiet and polite (and divorced) and his were loud and to my ears incredibly insulting to each other. I thought they were going to come to blows over how to grill the steaks, though they were extremely sweet to ME. They've now been married more than fifty years, and Hubby and I still look at each other and giggle when we hear the grilling argument raging in the kitchen.

Wow... I *loved* the examples and comments and how that all flowed.

Lots of good stuff there. Thank you.
