Anime/manga and the Bechdel test

[livejournal.com profile] octopedingenue is applying the Bechdel* test to anime and manga and would like your input.

* Or whatever you prefer to call it.

That's going to be a list so very long that it boggles me to even think about it. Possibly this is one reason why I like manga, eh?

That's why I'm going to start a wiki or something and make other people do the work!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-09-24 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Need webspace for that? I can have one up and running in, like, ten minutes. XD (Wel, ten minutes from the time I start, rather than ten minutes from, say, now, as I am not at home and am leeching off [livejournal.com profile] myrialux's wireless. :D)
octopedingenue: I get really sad at myself for thinking so hard about this. (but that doesn't mean I'm obsessed)

Sure! But I am still mulling over the best way(s) to set it up. I would like it to be collaborative so that I don't have to keep copy-pasting it can theoretically grow to encompass All Anime/Manga Ever and so serve as a very simple Pass/Fail resource list. But I started the list primarily to start discussion, because it's not a simple Pass/Fail situation—a technical Pass doesn't automagically make a series Good/Women-Friendly/Feminist, nor vice versa a Fail—so I want a way to incorporate the discussions, elaborations, and potential disagreements as well. Discussion in a wiki tends to get hidden/disorganized in the Talk pages.

Let me know what you decide!

Immediate ideas: link it to a forum of sorts, so that each page in the wiki links to a forum post for that series that allows discussion. Downside: you have to keep on top of the forum, or spammers flood it, and people may not want to click to another site and register over there to talk about it.

Or set it up as a forum to start with: less clicking, the person who starts the thread and the admins have the power to edit the first post and people can discuss under it. Downside: same as above, plus a limited circle of people who can edit.

Ors et it up as a blog, and work out a good category or title system that lists posts alphabetically by title. Each post has one title in it. You can set it up with a pool of editors who can edit the posts, and you can allow comments (there are plugins for Wordpress that allow subsequent comments to be emailed to people, and that allow comments to be threaded, so you get more of a threaded discussion going). Downside: same as the forum, but you can have a few more tools to fight spam - comment moderation, moderating the first comment someone posts and subsequent ones are OK, holding any comment with more than X number of links, and/or using Akismet to catch known spammer comments.

The blog idea sounds the most user-friendly, if people can just sign their names/e-mail addies and go. Downside: my total lack of Wordpress knowledge and of editor pools. Still, I had better start this soon before my LJ and/or wrist tendons are entirely crippled from overposting. I appoint you first editor lackey pool droplet! Go deputize people! Also it needs a name. "Bekuderu Tesuto" lacks a certain gravitas.

Upside: Wordpress is easy-peasy! After some "Huh? WTF?!" moments, of course. Of course, I need a good subdomain name, as I use Wordpress to run magatsu.net and I can't install two instances of Wordpress in the same space. :D So I'll get it up and running as soon as we figure that out, and it can go at [name].magatsu.net. :D

(Downside: I will be pretty much absent / useless for all of this until probably the weekend, because this week road construction has taken to resurfacing the road in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT with jackhammers and flashing lights blazing, so the 3 hours of sleep a night I have been getting do not help with the website-planning part of my brain. My fault for making an oddly popular post!)

other than, like, toomuchfreetime.magatsu.net or 2conversationsdontmakethisafeministseries.magatsu.net or passfail.magatsu.net or depressingstats.magatsu.net or needsleep.magatsu.net or 2chickstalkedthat1time.magatsu.net, I got nothin'. Please make the internet pick something brilliant, Web Guru Lady!

(I got 12 hours of sleep last night, I AM A HAPPY KITTY.)

I like the name! I have no user info in my e-mail, unfortunately. Give me time-wasters to play with, please, while I am still in a gas shortage and so stuck at home with boredom!

You're back to Octopedingenue, as I said the hell with it, deleted that user, and made a new one. XD But once you log in, you can create a new user and se that name, if you want. :) You've got admin POWAHS.

I just wrote 5 months of Yuuko's weekly planner. I FEEL your PAIN. Actually, I feel my own pain, quite acutely.
