And later he decided to pay tribute to his little friend by becoming....THE RED ADMIRAL! And secretly started to build a flying cocoon structure to gather an army of his little fluttery friends. *laughs*

Awesome story though, all the reason why I love butterflies so much. I'll never forget like 2-3 yrs ago in our tree in the backyard was CLUTTERED with a mass of monarch butterflies. I wish I would've used my head to take a pic of it but it was far from my mind I guess. That was the last time I ever saw something like that.

Aww, yes. I enjoyed that when it came out in the Post weekend magazine supplement. Butterflies are one form of attractive wildlife that simply isn't so common in our neighborhood, although we have birds in plenty.

I sincerely miss fireflies. I haven't seen them in several years now. They used to be incredibly common in our back yard when I was growing up. It saddens me to think that future generations will never know the joy of putting lightning bugs in a mason jar and watching them blink.

We still have them in our area, but certainly not in the numbers I remember from childhood.

Apparently the larva of fireflies eat soft-bodied critters, like slugs (whoa, go firefly babies - I hate slugs), aphids, and mites. I guess today's 'burbs have less of those, and the ones that are available may be poisoned with pesticides.
