Dragon*Con Panel of Fail. Perhaps not a good idea to read if you're feeling sporky about the lack of representation of the Other in SF.

Well, on the upside, it's renewed my enthusiasm for trying to plot out the idea I had for a "how teleportation changes the world" story, which, because teleportation makes travel easy so it would need to have characters from many different parts of the world OMG, not to mention it would be a huge collaborative scientific project across many fields from medicine to robotics, oh, and hey, religion, and because the only character that my brain has given any attributes is the woman heading the project who is a brilliant 40-something Japanese woman who happens to be a lesbian. It needs other characters. And a decision on the nature of the soul. You know. Easy stuff. I don't know why I haven't dashed this one off already.

You could knock it off tomorrow during lunch, I bet.

Thanks for the link. I wish I could say I was surprised but . . .

Oh, wonderful flashbacks of the Dallas Fantasy Fairs. I'm especially familiar with the panel hijacking for promotional purposes: what's always funny is their response when you tell them that their ideas are not only unoriginal but usually plagiarized.

And people look at me in amazement when I tell them I don't often bother to actually attend panels at cons...

Cosplay-watching snd window-shopping is always, always more fun!

When I can't afford or can't be bothered (but do have a working back) to go into D*C proper, I can still hang out in the Peachtree Mall food court, the only con food source, and ogle the flocks of people in costume in line for Chinese.

Wow. Another lovely dose of "sad but true" regarding some of the close-mindedness out there.

Makes me want to revisit a story idea I had a while back, but I ultimately let slide for two reasons:

1) it had elements of a few things I'd read and some I'd not read, which made the concept seem less unique and more contrived

2) I'd planned to create a mixture of cultures (believing that many races/cultures would participate in space colonization) but failed to move away from European-based names. Swift, aren't I? FAIL

And this is why I don't read much SF. Seriously. So much of it is so obviously written by straight white men that I just can't relate to much of it, or get into the story when it's so obviously coming from such a narrow POV. Augh. Rar.

Still pissed for missing D*C this weekend because of back, but less pissed now for having missed this. WHAT THE FUCK. I have never been to a D*C talky fan panel that did not bore me silly or make me want to hijack the microphone to stop the dumb, which is why I now go to shop and people-watch and skip the panels altogether, and why I feel slightly mystified when people talk about other, positive panel experiences at other, more panel-y cons. But THIS tops all my annoyed memories for sheer OH MY GOD.
