I'm not worried about stagey-ness, because I don't mind it looking like she's posing for a portrait. But she has to interact with the environment in some way, in order to look like she belongs there, which is the crux of the matter.
She has obviously been enjoying a much better summer vacation than mine, even having to put on a corset, hat and gloves every time she steps out of her cabin. :)
I think the purse vs. binoculars case issue will be resolved in the details of the case-- the interior of a purse looks very different than that of an empty case. And often there's a little thing in the middle to stabilize the binoculars you can hint at.
