Actually, it *does* eff up the stats for me to get lots of hits that don't mean anything. I'm not looking at the stats for fun, but trying to figure out what sorts of things I need to put on that site to drive REAL traffic there because I would like to, say, SELL BOOKS and PAY RENT, and the bogus stats make that impossible.

(Not to mention it was funny the first couple of times, but after the eleventh, it's a little tiring. The best comedians know when to stop telling the joke.)

SO therefore I AM REQUESTING that every time you drop a bogus hit onto my site stats, you purchase something from Amazon.com through one of our Amazon referrer links. It doesn't have to be any of the books featured on the page like Rachel's memoir or the manga reviews, because if you access Amazon through one of our links, the referrer ID stays with you and credits us with a few pennies. Although Rachel would love it if you bought her memoir, which was published by a real publisher and everything, and is quite good to boot.

...I've been busy trying to keep a little dinosaur from being swamped by the pyroclastic wave o' doom for the past few days.

But: I didn't know that about Amazon! If I take leave of my senses and start buying stuff there, I'll click through you.

Most of my new and used books come through ABEbooks these days, but I tend to do presents via Amazon.

I didn't realize we got a cut of *everything* bought after a click-through, not just the item in question, but we got a little bit of change from an Anthony Bourdain DVD set someone bought after going through our links. :D

If I remember, I'll post closer to Christmas to ask people to go through our links when buying Christmas presents if they're not using someone else's links. XD

Actually, I don't know if you've heard, but Abebooks has been acquired by Amazon (http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1182552&highlight=).

Oh no, I did not know that. That's bad; there are reasons I buy from ABE. Thank you for the news.

Hmmm, I'll have to remember that, about the click-through. I use Amazon a great deal, for manga I can't get easily elsewhere, for obscure books the Young Lady needs for school, and for presents.

:D Yaay!

So these are Google searches or something? I've never quite understood how and where these statistics come from - but they are pretty amusing (though I hope they calm down a bit for you...).

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-08-07 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. :) When you click a link to visit a website, you carry the link with you, and it gets put into the site logs (that's the referer report). If it's a search engine link you're coming from, it carries the search terms you used and the stats software can pull that out and put it into a separate report. :)

well shoot. I wish I'd known that before I bought my copy of goblins through amazon. I would have clicked on through you. Mind noting me on da (not here because I tend to delete emails that come from lj out of habit x.x otherwise my email account goes out of control) a link to where to go to click through you? I'll make a mental note to do that each time I go to buy a book from them.

Sent to mistressofspam! I am 99.99% sure that's you! If not, someone's getting a surprise!

it's me! No worries! Yay! I'll remember this when I order again (when I get back int own I'm planning on stocking up on a lot of celtic knotwork books and things like that)
