telophase: (Mello - bite my ass)

Oh come ON people..

I just started watching this week's Design Star on HGTV* and one of the contestants injured her finger in the first episode, and it's swollen so badly her ring needs to be cut off. So we're treated to a scene of a fire engine pulling up and the firefighters cutting it off. I am really hoping that they volunteered to come out and do that, rather than someone on crew calling 911 for something this simple. They really should have dispatched someone on the crew to take her to the ER or a clinic and get it cut off. :P

And this has been your bitch of the day.

* And it always astounds me that, because the winner of the show becomes a host of a show on RGTV, some of the contestants think it's a GOOD IDEA to be bitchy and catty about the others in the interview segments, and to just be all-round nasty. No way in hell is HGTV making someone who does that a host.

Hey, I've been watching that too! Frankly, that particular contestant lasted a lot longer than I thought she would. She's had time management and indecision issues the whole series.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
And her "It's not MY fault" attitude really came out here - I can't believe she blamed everyone else for not telling her to bring the tile back before going to the rest of the stores. (Did you see that exit interview?! Surrounded by ignorant people indeed!)

[identity profile] fmanalyst.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, and it not occurring to her to bring back the tile is very close to passive aggressive. And do the producers not give them/let them have cellphones to communicate with each other?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
They must not have landed a cellphone contract for product placement. XD I know Top Chef contestants are always ostentatiously using their cellphones.

Exactly. I mean, look at who won the first two seasons - both really nice, friendly, personable folks who happen to be really talented. But I know for the first half of the second season, I didn't think Kim would win. Not because I didn't think she had what it took, but because she seemed so nice and quiet compared to everyone else.

I was so sad when the dude from College Station turned out to be so catty behind the scenes - I grew up in CS, so I would have rooted for him. :/ No idea why he thought that was a good idea.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I pegged him for that attitude first episode. He just rubbed me wrong from the first.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted not to think so. It's like he was attempting to be Christian from Project Runway without Christian's actual talent and skills.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Since even the concept of Project Runway makes me want to run away, I wouldn't know. XD But seriously, a model can get away with a nasty attitude and a certain amount of backbiting is actually expected. They just have to look pretty. But a designer has to work with people, they have to be someone that an audience likes. That attitude won't fly in a series.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
PR isn't about the models, it's about the fashion designers. :) You may be thinking of Make Me a Supermodel (in which the nicest girl won, actually). I, er, might have watched that one. XD (But at least I fast-forwarded through all the drama and just watched the photo shoots and actual competition bits!)

I really like the ones where people are forced to be creative under pressure - Top Chef, Project Runway, and Shear Genius (that one not so much as the other two). Sometimes there's amazing stuff, and sometimes ... there isn't. XD

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. Well, I already admitted I hadn't watched it. XD But fashion designers have a certain reputation for cattiness too, so I think the point still stands.

About the only two that I watch on anything approaching a regular basis are Design Star and Next Food Network Star, and those are mostly because there's nothing I'm particularly fond of going up against them. I have a very limited viewing range - if it's not on one of the HGTV or Discovery channels, I rarely bother. *is geeky that way*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only caught one of the Next Food Network Star episodes, but it didn't grab me. Probably because I was also watching Top Chef at the same time and I only have the capacity for one cooking competition show at a time. XD

Yeah, designers can be quite catty, but I can forgive it if they have the talent and work ethic to back it up, are entertaining (rather than just tedious), and can take it along with dishing it out - it's one of those industries in which you *do* have to establish a sort of notable persona, after all. But I love costuming, too, so to watch what parts of their design process we can get is fun. :)

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I will admit that I watch the NFNS only when I've seen what's on the other channels. It's kind of a dead time, programming-wise, and I "watch" mostly in the sense that it's on while I'm online and the TV is right next to my computer desk. XD

Oh, definitely - fashion design is one of those field where you have to fight for anyone to even notice you, so I can't blame them too much. But about the only fashion-type show I've ever given a damn about is What Not To Wear, and that's mostly because Stacy & Clinton manage to be entertaining while they're ripping someone's wardrobe to shreds (sometimes literally) and because they don't rip the person's EGO to shreds while they're at it. A lot of those makeover shows they seem to delight in making people feel even more horrible about themselves, but WNTW people seem to leave feeling better about themselves both in terms of fashion and as people.

I actually went to school with his older brother (awful, awful boy) and my mom was always in the office talking to his dad (the principal; he was very nice) about my sister. I was rooting for him, too. :(

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think we knew him or his family, but Mom taught in Bryan schools rather than CS. He's about the right age that Mom might have taught him in middle school right before she retired had it been Bryan.

[livejournal.com profile] kaligreeneyes and I just finished watching that same show and thought the same thing. However, I suspect calling the firecrew made for better TV, even if going to the ER would have been the more sensible thing to do.

BTW, I was disappointed that Mikey V. got booted. I was rooting for him. Ah, well, time to root for local girl Trish, even though the blonde woman, who is so bland that I can't even remember her name, will most likely win, as she doesn't make the show all about her.

[identity profile] fmanalyst.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think Trish has the better designs though.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
The blonde is Jennifer, and the only reason I know that is that I remembered one of them was named Jennifer, and applied the process of elimination. :)

They were right about Mikey V not being comfortable in front of the camera. I'm the person who's usually defending non-smiling models in high fashion ads to people, and I yelled "WOULD IT HURT YOU TO SMILE?" at the TV when he did his hosting bit, though.

But at least he was eliminated for that and not for screwing up his design. :)
