Does anyone here have a clue how to set Windows XP so that when yout ake a screenshot, all it does is save it to the clipboard, NOT open up that stupid ()#*()#*%#(*$)(# PrintKey thing? I hate that with a passion. My cursory searches have so far not pulled up answer.

I did it once before, either on the 2000 box I started with here or back when we upgraded to XP. But my computer was replaced last week, so I've got a brand-new install of XP and I can't figure out how to do this. :P

ETA: As I say in the comments below, I've figured out it's an add-on that's activated when you take a screenshot that was obviously put onto the disk image by tech resources here under the (mistaken) impression that it's useful*. I'm trying to figure out if I can permanently disable it *without* deleting it, because I have a feeling the nightly updates will notice it's missing and re-install it. But if I can't figure out another way, I'll do that.

* Maybe for people who take screenshots of perfectly normal error messages and paste them into bloated Word documents to send to people instead of just typing the error message into the email. Not for those of us who do GRAPHICS PROFESSIONALLY.

Hm, I think the behavior you want is the default. At least, it is what I am used to, and I haven't done anything to reconfig it. In fact, I don't even know what you are referring to. I wonder if you can track down that app and simply delete it or rename it.

I've figured out it's an add-on that my workplace obviously puts on their disk images under the mistaken impression that it's useful. No idea how to disable it so far without getting into my local_admin account and deleting the damn thing. (because I have no idea if the nightly updates will notice it's gone and re-install it.)

When I had XP, I used Ctrl+Prt Sc. :\ Have you tried that? *so not technologically advanced*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that and Alt+Prt Sc is what brings up PrintKey. I've figured out it's an add-on that for some reason my workplace thinks people WANT to have and I have no idea how to disable the damn thing.

Weird, 'cause I've never had that happen before. Neither on XP or Vista. :|

Is this something you can petition tech resources to remove at all? :-(

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Off my individual computer? I doubt it. We'll see if removing it manually works or if it re-installs overnight. :P

Ah, pity. Best wishes with that.

I'm not sure if it'll work for you, but maybe try to disable it with Microsoft's Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) if removing it doesn't last.

Cool, thanks, I may have to try that.

FWIW, Ctrl-C while in a normal OS error box will copy a text version of the error (along with the OK button - heh) to the clipboard.
