And in a nice follow-up to Boobgate...

...[livejournal.com profile] vito_excalibur has an most excellent suggestion, the Open Source Women Back Each Other Up Program.
Here's my pledge: if I see somebody groping you in public, and you're not moaning Yes! Yes! Yes!, I will break through your Somebody Else's Problem invisibility field and come over and ask if you're okay. If your situation looks dangerous enough I can't help on my own, I will call over friends or, if it's a situation in which I think the cops would be on your side, I will call the cops. If you're being harassed by a guy, you can say so to me, even if you don't know me. I pledge I will distract him so you can get away, or I will tell him that he needs to leave, or whatever I can do to the best of my ability.

[...]

Yes, even at Wiscon. I pledge that even if I don't know you, if there is a creepy guy following you around, you can say so, and I will not say to you go hide in your room; I will say to him go find another party, or if necessary, go home. I will come with you if you need to talk to the con organizers. I will not make you feel like your right to control over your own body is not a big deal.
I'm going to be quoting the whole thing if I don't stop. And "creepy guy" is defined as gender-neutral.

Alas, something that's been needed at cons before some neo-hippies came up with OSBP. I've been tasked a few times to deliver a Go Away message to the importunate.

[Why, yes, I am aware that a woman needing an older white male's help in dealing with this problem Illustrates Significant Issues. I'm going to run away now.]

It would be nice if girls could all be Buffy, and kick jerks' asses up and down the street. We can't. But frankly even Buffy can't be Buffy without Willow & Giles & Xander. Nothing at all wrong with being an ally. If what you have to offer is being a Big Old White Guy, then use those powers for good, dammit! :)

[identity profile] selenite.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I try. :)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[But don't run away too far! Your services may be needed! XD]

[identity profile] selenite.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'll be at cons, and faires, and such. But if a Bujold-list-level gender wars discussion breaks out I'll leave the debating to [livejournal.com profile] tygerr.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a great idea.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Did I point out the resident A-Kon and Animefest Creepy Guy [tm] last year? Certainly someone to keep a weather eye out for if he's trying to guilt young, cute artists into drawing skeevy pictures of him and anime characters. (It's a different health problem each year.)

[identity profile] heyoka.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, is he still around?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. He remembers me, though, and steers clear. XD

[identity profile] heyoka.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, wondering now if this is the same creepy guy I encountered. This was several years ago. That dude's schtick was, as I recall, superheroines having sex with him.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, maybe not. Was he kind of tall and walked with a cane? (I'm not remembering what year he started using the cane.) But this one's been around a long time - I remember finding a forum where artists were complaining about his skeevy requests back when A-Kon was still at the airport.

[identity profile] heyoka.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Kind of tall, I think, and dark-haired. I don't think there was a cane, but this would have been...1995-96?

One rather hopes it's the same person and he diversified, there being a finite number of superheroines. I mean, lord knows it's entirely possible for there to be more than one freak of that level in the fandom in that area, but I sleep better at night believing there isn't. :P

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Might have been him. I don't remember the color of his hair ... maybe brownish? But I didn't start attending A-Kon until 1998-99 or so.

I have no idea what area of the country or what con this is from, but an artist once told me online that her local Creepy Guy's particular fetish was pictures of furries with their feet stuck in glue.

Mind Bleach, please!

He remembers me, though, and steers clear.

Oooh, what did you do to him?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Just looked him in the eye and said "I'm not comfortable with the stuff you ask people to draw." He said "Fair enough" and that was the end of it.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably did, but point him out again; I have a lousy memory for faces.

I remember hearing him torturing some young artists with a boring recital of his health problems, but I did not overhear him saying anything skeevy.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. Do you remember which health problem it was? I knew it was cancer one year and back problems another year, but forgot in which order they occurred when describing him to [livejournal.com profile] viridian5 below.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Heart trouble, I think.

OT

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to mail you a box of displays for keychains, etc, rather than dragging them on a plane. Keep an eye out for it.

Cool, thanks! Just don't use FedEx or DHL or I might never see them. XD USPS and UPS are both fine.

This is a great idea.

I'm reminded of the time after one of my old band's performances where one of the guys who helped print up our shirts came up to me drunk and would not leave me alone. There was no groping, but he was close enough to me whenever I moved that I was getting his spit on my skin, and he was telling me how I'd sung from the soul and he was a virgin and.... Being that he was our shirt supplier, I was even warier of making a scene to get away. A woman I really don't like--personality conflicts--saw I was having trouble, came over, said the band needed me elsewhere, and got me away. My gratitude was huge.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a Creepy Guy [tm] at the local anime cons who loves to get artists in the artist alley to draw pictures for him, of him with anime characters on his lap, to anime characters in intimate situations with him, up to occasionally asking for the artist, provided she's young and cute, to draw *herself* with him. I did find out when he came up to me -- after I demurred by saying I had to draw another picture for someone and the someone, who was standing right there, said "Oh no, mine can wait!", so I was forced to outright tell him "I am not comfortable with your type of requests" -- that he took that well and wandered off.

But then I was also not as young and cute as some of the other artists. The one next to me drew him with some character on his lap (fully clothed), and I heard him telling her all about his horrible diagnosis of cancer and how he was going to have this dangerous operation, etc. Funnily enough, the next year someone told me he was going around telling everyone about his horrible diagnosis of back problems and how he was going to have this dangerous operation, etc. I wonder what he's going to have this year?

I didn't back a female friend up against a creepy guy in public once, and I very much regret it. I hope the shame of it and reminders like this one will make me act more like a sane human next time.

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Related to that: http://www.unshelved.com/archive.aspx?strip=20080423

And yes, we do need to stick up for anyone, of either gender, who is being harassed by said gender-neutral "creepy guy".

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
100% awesome idea. I totally agree with this. People need to back each other up in these sorts of situations regardless of things like whether you know/like the person or not. Harassment is Not Okay, and working together to fight it should trump everything else.
