rachelmanija and I found the funniest part of Worldcon to be the program book. They had an article in it designed to keep costumers and other outrageous and loud con types from parading around outside the convention facilities. It carefully explained that the Japanese prefer not to draw attention to themselves, behave in a restrained manner, and do not like being the center of attention.
Obviously the author of the article has not been down to Shinjuku on a Saturday night.
Rachel and I quoted that passage to each other all the time: in Shinjuku, in Shibuya, in Harajuku, and even in Kyoto when we saw a 40something man playing grabass with his girlfriend on the street.
I have a really interesting article on dating and flirting in Japan in my memories. I find it an interesting view into the culture, but the author didn't quite get that "what happened in my circle of friends, who were pretty clearly of a certain socioeconomic status" did not necessarily equal "true of the whole nation and everyone in it."

I kind of detect some similarities to gyaru and hime looks in Japan, another island nation famed for its understated elegance.
Yikes.

Though I have to admit I'm happy to see so many larger-sized women showing off their bodies and not being trashed for it.
