That sounds like the car I first drove, which was a lemon, pretty much. We had the engine rebuilt under warranty. I have no idea why my parents didn't just sell it at that point and get something else, but they didn't and I inherited it when I turned 16.
I got very good at diagnosing problems by what smell it emitted through the A/C system.
