Another series to add to the shopping cart. I love Viz's Bleach and Rouruni Kenshin translations, am less than fond of their Naruto tranlation. It all depends on who gets assigned to what.
(Is it terrible of me to only now regret that Death Note didn't end with chapter 60? Because I have a thing for complete sets and don't exactly enjoy being forced to buy twenty volumes of something. At least Death Note doesn't ever drag.)
Well, if the second story arc blows, you can always stop buying after whatever volume has chapter 60.
I think their translation depends on what it's going into - if it's going into Shonen Jump, then they Americanize it more; if it's going directly into book form, they don't do as much.
But I swear if I get any more of the bitching, moaning, and complaining on the post I posted to teh community, I'm going to turn comment notification off because I'm sick of it. Every company sucks in different ways, and everybody has their own opinion and if you don't like the translation why don't you bloody learn Japanese and do it yourself?
I normally don't have that strong of an opinion about it, but 2395723905249082 posts with "THAT SUCKS!!" and no actual content in my inbox are really the fuck annoying.
Hmm, I think preferring one company over another is perfectly resonable. Different companies have different audiences, pick of different titles, have different standards as far as time/dedication to the original are concerned. At the very least it's like the Pepsi/Coke debate--maybe you can tell the difference and maybe it's just brand name imprinting, but what's wrong with preferring one over the other?
The THIS SUCKS posts annoy me because who didn't see this coming? Complaining about the inevitable is unproductive.
I look forward to the community becoming even more ridiculously large (1500 members OH MY GOD) but, umm, i'm also a little worried since there is absolutely no moderation. We might really need it come October.
Yup.. If whoever owns it doesn't want to mod, someone can always create a modded comm for less-intense discussion. XD
I edited to add the "Viz has a deal with the company that publishes SJ, idjits, of COURSE they were going to get it!!" after the first fifteen "THIS FUCKING SUCKS" messages.
I know. So far the announcement post has over 200 replies and almost no wanking. Lapdances, the distribution of elitist asshats to everyone, shipping wars between furniture and minor characters, but no serious wankage.
There's lots of people anticipating the N00B INVASION OH NOES! but I'm thinking it's not going to be as bad as all that, because DN pretty much appeals to a slightly more cerebral audience, for the most part.
I do anticipate hitting fandom_wank a few more times, though. :D
I laugh every time someone says "There are no stupid Death Note fans!" because dude, it isn't true. There are plenty of dumb people who like this series. (Well, it does have a fifth grade reading level, no matter how much we like to pretend it's High Literature.)
But overall all it must be at least a little true, because otherwise the community would be overrun with pointlessness. (There was a recent spat of useless introduction posts, but those are not against the rules so meh.)
Although the OMGTHISSUXX post that follows yours looks almost like a parody post, it's so true to form. (Actually this post might be healthy? All the people who agree with the OP can gravitate to it, and not cluter your nice, sane post with wankery.)
Here is the biggest problem I see with the translation: Rem. How are the translators going to handle the revelation of Rem's gender? I think the Japanese uses gender-neutral terms that we don't have in English. Hrrrm. Maybe they'll just have everyone mistake Rem for male, and Rem not call them on it.

I nominate the chick who claimed that she wanted [SPOILER FOR 59] not to happen EVEN IF it happening the way it dead meant better writing and it not happening meant bad writing. Because OMG heaven forbid that bad things happen to attractive characters!

Was that really supposed to be a surprise? 'Cause maybe it's my lack of manga experience, but I pegged the reapers genders right off the bat: My thinking was Ryuk = king = male. So, having established that, I just thought the more delicate and willowy Rem looked female, not "oh, Rem's a younger, bishier version of Ryuk, and therefore also male."
I was surprized. Rem is the second reaper to "fall" for Misa, so I assumed Rem was male like Zealous/Jealous was. Misa also assumed that Rem was male, and was surprised to learn that she is female. I wasn't going by looks since it's hard to tell, with Shinigami (and also the latest volume has a rule that they can't have sex, haha, so maybe they aren't "really" male or female at all.)
And: A shinigami is "bish"? That's sort of...bishonen means unbelieveably beautiful in an androgynous way, I don't think it applies to the extremely bizzare looking shinigami.

ALSO. hinoko is the mod. I know she reads through the community sometimes, but I haven't seen her post or reply for, like, months. In a lot of ways it's better this way. How much wank is caused by bad mod behaviour?
I think that if something is published you have a right to criticize it whether you can write/draw/read Japanese or not. There's nothing wrong with saying one translation is better than another, any more than there is with saying that the Dragonball guy is a better artist that the webcomic guy or that Death Note has a better storyline than Bleach. Or, you know, whatever.
I just object to the people jumping to conclusions that it's going to suck, mostly because they're going to find fault with any translation which isnt the scanlation, because that's what thye're used to.
Which, by the way, is being done from a Chinese translation, so even though the languages are fairly close (well, closer than any Romance or Germanic language), is still not directly from the original.
And then there's a person in Sweden who keeps insiting that writing polite letters to Viz isn't going to do nay good because OMG they wrote seven letters to them asking why they weren't continuing Banana Fish and then eventually got a letter back telling them that Sweden was not in Viz' potential audience. So, therefore, even if 100 Americans write in and tell Viz that they would like a very strict translation that keeps the proper names and suffixes (because that's quite key to a lot of the rlationships in DN as they move and shift), than OMG THAT WON'T HAVE ANY EFFECT BECAUSE VIZ IS A HUGE MONOLITHIC COMPANY

That's my birthday!
I'm taking this as a sign. I don't know what it means, but it's definitely a sign.

Yes, they hate us and don't want us to give them our money, so of course they will do whatever it takes to alienate us. XD
