I love how he was making his students first abandon their elitist brainiac artsy stance "above" the hoi polloi (I have had to fight this fight with the Young Lady so many times ...), and then making them focus the good parts of that stance - their mental quickness, their creativity - to bring art and happiness to the people on the street in a form that they could appreciate.
And I love how fate brought them the villanelle customer - giving them a chance to stick it to someone who was asking for it, and do it with style - because that's a great villanelle.
Oh, I don't know if the monkey guy was *asking for it*. He could have just been asking. I mean, the opportunity to write poetry about monkeys is a precious gift. More people understand that than you might imagine.
I must take this opportunity to link to the Cheese Ode (http://dr-pretentious.livejournal.com/96747.html). (You may well have seen it, of course.) I do not associate cheese with monkeys, nor do I think the Monkey Villanelle is bad poetry. It's just... occasional poetry with a certain shameless and headlong verve. And "bees" and "trees".
the poem is awesome! totally got some monkeys to a T there xD
but also, the concept is nice at sweet. i wish there were more poetry stands or something. it would be one of those things that quietly makes the world better.
