AWESOMETASTIC

Via [livejournal.com profile] paulafrom2son: in the category of AWESOMETASTIC,
an article on open-source education where, basically, school give away courses for free. And a huge list of open-source courses offered by MIT Both grad and undergrad. ([livejournal.com profile] yhlee! There is much math!)

And, since Himself emailed me the specs for my computer* I shall post them below the cut, for a wee bit of drama.

* yes I am a dork and the specs pretty much read like gibberish to me. I think I was amusing him by wandering around Fry's** saying things like "Look! It has 'EXTREME' on the box! That's good! And 'GIGABIT'!" Well, either amusing or embarrassing.

** If you are unaware of Fry's, it is the geek Mecca. I mean, they have an ENTIRE AISLE for TELESCOPES.

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad (yes, Quad)***
4GB RAM (don't recall the specs)
Generic nVidia 8600GT GPU with 256MB RAM & 2 DVI ports (w00t double monitors)
Maxtor 500GB 7200RPM 16MB buffer SATA HD
LG Dual-Layer DVD Writer

ALSO, I got a 20" widescreen monitor, an external hard drive to hold my iPod music and stuff, a teeny set of speakers to go into my iPod for the times when I have a migraine and can't deal with earphones, another set of iPod earphones because the ones I have are just the teensiest bit too large and hurt after a couple of hours, a new keyboard and trackball, a wireless adaptor for the new computer, the computer case itself (ATX micro, to take up less desk real estate), random bits and bobs like a static wristband thing, speakers for the computer since my old ones were dying, a 4' long power strip with 12 plugs in it (spaced far enough apart that those huge power adapters will fit next to each other!), a 6' SCSI cable so I can move the old computer away from the scanner, and I'm sure I'll remember what else I got later. Well, and a legit copy of XP Pro SP2 for $149. :D

All for under $2000. THIS is why I wanted to build my own. :)

Anyway, as Himself says, it's tricked out for gaming, which wasn't the original intention, but as there were many sales going on, and as sometimes the difference between the tricked-out thing and the not-so-tricked out thing was, like, $20, it made sense to go up, since I had the money for it. And I won't have to upgrade this puppy for a damn long time, which is what I wanted.

*** "It says QUAD! That's good!"

I have computer envy! I need to either get mine miraculously fixed or buy a new one. QUADS ARE GOOD! RIGHT? YEAH? XD I KNOW 4GB is good.

Opensource Education means srs bsnz! *examines* I've been checking out various distance ed. options so this is great!

Thanks for the links!

One of the things I KNEW I wanted was as much RAM as possible. So when a motherboard with 4GB was possible ... wooooo! XD

And quads are GOOOOOOD! Himself keeps making appreciative noises! XD
