I has a plan

Well, what my iPod dying has done is crystallize what I'm doing as regards my near-future computing plans. You see, the iPod Classic 80-gig won't work with Win2K, which is what my home system runs. I first thought - well, dammit, I'll just upgrade to a legit copy of WinXP and that means that the new computer I get will be a frankenstein.

And then on the way to buy that I realized that I was a total dumbass and that I'd already 90% talked myself into the plan of buying a cheapass laptop plus a sweet desktop and that if they had a cheapass laptop of the sort I was going to be getting (because with me, 90% means I'm going to do it: it's that ADHD thing in which I do NOT mull things over and list pros and cons and so on), I should go ahead and do that.

And they did. I've got a cheapass Gateway ML6720 Internet box. It runs Vista, but as I'm not actually going to be installing my expensive art programs on it, it doesn't matter. I will just be able to bitch about Vista legitimately in the OS Wars. It comes with wireless already installed, and as the boy told me he'd give me his wireless router, I can, once I get it, sit on the sofa and post to Livejournal.

Plz to be asking anyone tempted to say "You shouldn't have done that; you should have done this instead not to ask it, because all it will do is tick me off, as I'm not going to be taking everything back and redoing the entire technology plan. :)

WELL I WISH U'D TELL MY MAC B-CUZ IT DIES AT LEAST 1X A WEEK!

(But it's pretty elderly so I forgive it.)

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me. I have a cheapass low-end laptop and a ZOMG nitro-sports-car homebuilt desktop, and the combo works pretty well for me.

I have no opinions on what you should do - you did what you figured made sense, and you're happy, so I'm happy!

(Jeez, it's crazy it when people second-guess other rational human beings over things that won't affect them!)

:D Yeah, I've found that too often someone doesn't stop and think that hey - this person just dropped a lot of money on something, perhaps I shouldn't tell them that they got it all wrong! LET ME HARSH THEIR SQUEE!

Eeeeeeeeeeee! Sounds like an awesome plan to me! One I hope to emulate should I come into Enough Funds, aka get a better paying job, One of These Days.

And now to be asking the really important question. If you got an ipod too, what color is it? (As an arteeest, I feel this is most important of all tech questions.)

Blaaaaack, of course! :D My choices were silver or black, so I picked black. And got a black silicone cover for it. XD

So I can have this black thing get lost on the inside of my black purse a lot.

This is pretty much what I did. Well, except my desktop isn't really *sweet*, but it's a damn sight better than what I had previously. And it's definitely more souped-up than my laptop, which is a decent little Vista machine for when I feel like getting out of the damn house, or travel. I had some debates with people about just getting a high-end laptop and no desktop -- but dangit, I don't like spending all my computing time on a laptop. It's just not as comfortable.

I seriously considered the laptop-only plan, but it would cost so much more to do what I need to do with graphics that it's the same to less to buy two computers. XD Technology is weeeeird.

[identity profile] heyoka.livejournal.com 2007-11-12 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's that too.

Hee - I had exactly the same sort of thing this weekend. I got home with my shiny new iPod Nano, which then sorrowfully informed me that my elderly iBook was not cool enough to be allowed to communicate with it. Cue a fast trip to the local Apple dealer for an emergency purchase of OS X Leopard.

(and for a few exciting moments it looked like my iBook might be too old to run Leopard, which had me seriously considering buying a new one. Fortunately my old system _just_ squeaked past the minimum specs, so I did not have to try to explain to my husband why I had a £830 iPod Nano...)

I'd be interested in what you think of Vista - it has inspired universal fear and loathing amongst my colleagues (we're software engineers), but I've yet to hear any comments on it from "normal" users.

I had two dead i-pods that I soldered and hammered into one fully functioning ones. I highly recommend it if you can nail down what's dead about it.

Indeed, what IS dead about it? I've fixed both of the ipods I had three different times. One of the solutions was literally folding a business card in three and putting it between the case and the hard drive...
