After massive amounts of procrastination pondering, I might actually have a story. Except that I haven't yet figured out who one character is or why they're doing what they're doing, which is rather key to the whole thing as there is, effectively, a character-shaped hole in the story. Suggestions will be entertained. And possibly laughed at, depending on how incongruous they are. :D

A non-tragic orphan in a natty green beret!

They are doing what they're doing because someone accidentally dropped a box overboard!

(I have no idea even what fandom this is...)

I know. Nobody but me does. Isn't it fun? :D

Because the cat on my daily calendar looks like her:

The character is Meatball Sung, and she just wants to play.

It's the lack of visible nose that does it, I think.

Yeah. All eyeball is teh_cute. XD

This character is a dueling mathematician! (You laugh! Yet if you somehow happen to be writing for me, you would please me greatly by inserting a dueling mathematician, muhahahahaha.)

Or is turned into a puppet! (I have Angel's "Smile Time" on the brain.)

Or is a mangaka who fights crime, kind of like Read or Die with even more papery hijinks!

When I listened to a book about the scientific and technological advances made by non-Western societies, I remember hearing about traveling freelance mathematicians (except that, oddly, I associate them with Europe despite the subject of the book...). They'd travel around and do people's books for them, or earn some extra money at fairs by doing math in front of people as a sort of sideshow attraction. I totally want to put one into a story sometime. XD

You write it, I'll read it!

*ahem*

I have duelling mathematicians AND puppets in the current WIP.

*polishes fingernails modestly*

(and it's just occurred to me that a mathematician/puppet battle would be so undeniably made of pure awesomeness that it must occur at some point in the book)

I am fickle and fictionally polyamorous! I will read yours too! W00t!

That is indeed made of win. It must be written!

Traveling accountants are in _Making Money_, the latest Pratchett, so maybe that's why the European association?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-30 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, because I've had the association for longer than that. Hm.

It's a third-party spy for a group that's neither the protagonists nor their enemies ...

It's a researcher doing research in a rather disreputable field, who is trying to keep what s/he is doing a secret ...

It's a member of the advance crew for a traveling entertainment or a media production ...

It's an alien shapechanger looking for a suitable place to spawn ...

It's an author taking a year off to try to recover from writer's block ....

(I feel like you're missing a piece from a jigsaw puzzle, and I'm attempting to help by offering up random pieces from the jigsaws we happen o have on hand! XD   )

Can you do "hot/cold" for us with our guesses? You know, "warm" if it's something sort of like what you need, and "freezing" if you're having to peel yourself up off the floor after busting a gut laughing?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-31 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm remaining absolutely circumspect in case my Yuletide recipient wanders by. What I'll probably do is to look at the emotional motivations behind the various suggestions, and see how that would apply in this particular scenario. :)

I expect that if this works at all, it'll be on the basis of the usual way help from others works when I'm creating: they suggest something and I immediately know that's not right. Which allows me to slowly chip away all the bits of the block of wood that don't look like an owl, and eventually I narrow in on the owl itself. :) (And to extend the metaphor: once I get a general idea of its species, I can fill in the details myslef. XD)
