Just watched episode 1 of Death Note from the TiVo - I hadn't seen the fansubs because I downloaded the first two, then the licensing announcement came out and I didn't bother to watch them or download the rest. Why? I have no idea. At any rate, I liked it a lot. :D

Oh, no argument here. A friend of mine who's seen it asked me what I thought of Light and I said he was a freaking psycho. She was impressed that I picked up on that fact in the first ep - apparently most people she knows thought he had a good heart until about halfway through the series.

...uh, NO. First death, that could be excused as curiosity. Second one - right in front of him - could have been just sheer disbelief. But the pages and pages after that? PSYCHO.

I think it's because he's male and he's good-looking. If he was female and ugly, everyone would be all 'OMG SHE'S SO PSYCHO'. However, since he is in the series, alongside L, it makes for 'OMG THEY"RE SUCH A KAWAII PAIR'.

Fanatic yaoi fangirls (notice I say 'fanatic', not 'all') can be very very scary.

Because he is teh hawt, and fangirls are often will to overlook glaring character flaws like sociopathic tendencies and rampant megalomania when a cute boy is involved.

Also, I have a half-formed theory about people being attracted to really violent/cruel characters because that kind of behavior fascinates and titillates them because it's so taboo. I think there's some kind of vicarious pleasure to be found in watching someone do horrible horrible things because it allows people to explore those violent thoughts and feelings in themselves in a safe manner. But I won't go into that in depth because it would just a bunch of tl;dr and full of my ignorant attempts at psychoanalzation. XD

i mean, he's a fictional character, so rabid fangirls don't scare me; none of it is real, and fantasies are often a healthy way of the human psyche to deal with scary things. also, at the very beginning i think light's ideals appeal, in a very primal way. heck, i've sure fantasized about blowing away all the assholes in the world. and i admit, if i found a death notebook, i'd be tempted, for a short while. i hope i'd stop while making my list and checking it twice...

what scares me is that in real life real women go for real bad boys. and real people in the US government make their fantasies about killing "bad guys" reality -- while taking issue with the perfectly harmless fantasizing of fangirls over fictional "child" porn.

Why do people like villains anyway? Because a lot of the time they're interesting more interesting than the heroes of the piece. Although to be honest, I found L is a lot more interesting than Light (and his rambling) in the case of Death Note. ....Does anyone actually not love L?

Also fangirls being fangirls, insanity is never much of a deterrant in the face of good-looking art. Muraki being case in point *ahem!* Not that I would know anything about that.

He starts out so very reasonable! He just wanted to wipe undesirables - as decided by a self-righteous teenaged perfectionist - out of existence. I can relate. I mean, minus the actual desire to go through with it.

Later on, when he became overtly passionate (enthusiastic! and sneaky!) & his rationality started to break down, I liked him enough to find it adorable. (The cute art definitely helped.) Plus, he always had something clever up his sleeve, so I was always on the verge of wanting him to get away with it.

Yeah, I never read past the first few chapters in the manga because Light scared me. Watched the anime on [adultswim] and it scared me even more. o.o seriously, how could anyone think him to be good? I'm now obsessed very interested in watching the rest of the series to see how it progresses. Because far too many people have tried to make Light out to be the good guy here. And he's so not. He filled HOW many pages in the first episode alone? O.O

And while Muraki might be the sexiest murderering, stalking, pedophiliac, rapist I've ever seen, he's still psycho as fuck. And does not deserve the fan following he has.

Oh, and people who write Muraki/Hisoka consentual sex are twisted, twisted individuals. o.o;;

But I like Muraki. ;_; He's a hot professional man with glasses...what's not to like? Sure, he is sadistic and psychotic as all hell, but he has amazing fashion sense. You could say it's to die for! HA HA. HA. Dressing well makes up for a lot of personality flaws.

I also love Light, because he is a complete dumbass. I'm not sure that's the reason you're looking for (My reason being "he makes me laugh. A lot. Especially when he's making crazyfaces. I don't know, I just find these sorts of characters cracktastically delicious in an "I can't believe this is even happening...what?" sort of way.

I can't really call myself a fangirl of either of them, though. That's reserved for Sanzo and Hakkai...who aren't exactly saints, themselves, but uhhhh...

There's a huge difference between "I love him because he's SO INSANE and can't wait to see what he comes up with next!" and "I love him and make excuses for his evil deeds because HE'S CUTE!" which I think is what the fanpoodles are doing. :D One is appreciating a well-portrayed character, and one is getting a crush on a mass murderer. :)
