I wonder which question I missed? Probably the one about the worlds three biggest religions? (And I totally slept through way more of highschool than that.)

And speaking of high schools, now I go back to watching the jdrama version of Gokusen, which I am inexplicably addicted to.

You paid attention during 80% of high school!

68-84% Pretty good, you know that there are libraries and newspapers, and you remember what you've read. You were a child that wasn't left behind!

Islam, Hinduism, Christianity? Why the Immaculate Conception question is even in there, I don't know.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I do recall a great deal of time spent on the rise of Christianity in my Western Civ class... although I doubt we got into doctrinal questions like that.

I picked those three religion, but I wasn't sure whether Buddhists or Christians were more populous, and got bogged down in thinking about conversions and whether they were counting China as Buddhist or atheist and gave up and picked Christianity over Buddhism. Maybe it was the dangling-modifier question I missed.

Oh man...Gokusen was my firsd asian drama...o addictive and cracktastic...just look what it did to me...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I watched the anime because my TiVo recorded it, thinking I might like it, and was right. And then I downloaded the manga. And once I discovered it on crunchyroll, I was a goner. XD

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I've only seen the first few eps of the anime(but need to fix that) and am ashamed to say I haven't read the manga. But make sure you watch the special, too, as it wraps up the story. I'm also rather fond of the second series, even though Nakama Yukie, Kumai and the head teacher are pretty much the only cast that stays.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
ISTR that the anime and manga are fairly close to each other. They've taken a few liberties with details in the live-action version, although they've stayed true to the overall story so far.

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
That' true of most of the manga adaptations. The Japanese adaptations of manga tend to change up the story, but remain true to the spirit(while the Taiwanese ones, in my experience, stay true to story details but change up character traits and relationships and development)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Interesting. Well, I'm happy that the details are changed,b ecause it makes me want to keep watching the show. If it had been exactly the same as the anime and manga, it would be too boring. XD

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
This is why most taiwanese dramas barely hold my attention(that and the fact that they drag everything out and are usually more concerned about pretty actors than good actors) but I love the japanese ones(which are usually better acted and very quickly paced) But yeah, a by-the-numbers adaptation would be dull. Gokusen pretty much made Nakama Yukie and Matsumoto Jun's acting careers, I think, though they're also both singers(and he has the scary-scary JE company backing him)

I missed the area-of-triangle question (though that one is less about me forgetting what I learned and more the fact that I never understood geometry in the first place), the Shakespeare question (we only studied Romeo and Juliet), the question about whether Iran is an Arabic country (it...isn't?), and the Immaculate Conception question, which totally baffled me. I'm not Catholic and never studied religion, but are they absolutely sure it refers to Mary's conception? Because that seems really odd. *blinks*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
I got the triangle because I remembered that a right triangle is merely half of a rectangle, so I could multiply the two sides that were not the hypotenuse and divide it by 2 to get the area. :)

Shakespeare - Twelfth Night is a comedy. And a pretty funny one at that.

I thought Iran counted as Arabic; they're certainly Islamic, and vaguely in the right area. :)

And yeah, Mary is the Immaculate Conception, because to be worthy of bearing the son of God, she had to be without sin, so she was conceived without original sin. It's a tricksy question often used to stump people. :)

*dies* Yeah, that was my reasoning too. It's close enough!

Whoa, really? I...totally didn't know that! XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea where I picked up the info about Mary; it certainly wasn't in highschool. XD I probably got it from some "Did you know...?" article in a magazine or something.

whether Iran is an Arabic country (it...isn't?)

You may be confusing Islamic for Arabic. They're not the same, even though they overlap. If you call someone Arabic, you're describing their ethnic group; if you call someone Muslim, you're describing their religion. Not all Arabs are Muslims, and not all Muslims are Arabs.

Persians are the largest ethnic group in Iran. Their language is Indo-European. (Arabic is Semitic.) Actually, Wikipedia says only about 3% of Iranians are Arab, which is a lot lower than I thought it was... hmm.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Actaully, I wasn't confusing Islamic and Arabic; I just thought the Arabic population was much bigger. Only 3%? Really? *blinks*

I think I was just thrown off by the phrasing of the question. I wasn't sure whether they meant 'an Arabic country' as in its geographic location, the size of the ethnic group, or what. I'm still not entirely clear on what they're asking, though looking at a map I can see that Iran is farther off to the side of the Arabic peninsula than I pictured it. Oh well.

I only got a 91 per cent, and now I feel like a failure ;_; I don't have a real high school diploma to begin with, only a certificate of proficiency.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-19 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
HS diplomas are sometimes overrated - two of the smartest people I know don't have theirs. One of them left school early to go to a special math and science college program - yes, without getting his GED - and then managed to not complete his undergrad years. However, he started working tech support and over the past decade worked his way up the ladder and is currently making a wad o'money installing computer systems.

The other one grew up with hippie parents - they were part of the Rainbow Tribe - and dropped out of school at 16 to smoke dope, basically. At 27 she sobered up, got her GED and BA, and I met her in library school. :)

I'm guessing the Iran/Arabic question was a trick one somehow, but how I don't know.

Unless there are more buddhists than christians on the planet.

Iranians are not Arabs; they are Aryans, a different ethnic group.
