Apparently I've been more affected than I thought over the kerfuffle about renaming The Dark is Rising to The Seeker (because, basically, nothing of the book remained in the movie). Last night I dreamed I was a screenwriter on the set of a live-action version of The Black Cauldron and I walked off the set because they kept mispronouncing "Fflewder Fflam" (in Welsh "ff" is a soft, aspirated "f" while "f" is hard, more like "v") like the Disney movie did. I told them it was symptomatic of the lack of respect they held to the original story. And then I obtained the film rights to some YA fantasy that my brain couldn't decide if it was named "The Iron Butterfly" or "The Steel Butterfly" although it was sure that the butterfly in question did transform from iron to steel over the course of the story. Don't remember much else about it - there was some sort of wicked witch in it, and horseback chases over fields, and someone jumping off a giant spool of rope.

Aw man, the Prydain Chronicles! It's been forever since I thought about them. Arawn, scariest thing evar. At least to my young, feverish brain....and let's not start about The Seeker. There was open weeping when I saw the stupid previews in the theater.

It's been so long since I read the Prydain books that I've forgotten almost everything about them, so it'll be like reading them for the first time again. :D

I have no desire and no plans to see The Seeker.

I just bought a set of them at borders because the cat finally succeeded in chewing my omnibus with the yummy picture of Taran (older) on the cover to pieces. Eventually, I will re-read them. Trying to re-read The Dark Is Rising so that my righteous indignation may reach it full indignation-ness.

You should! They are awesome.

I think that's the wisest course of action.

I had no idea that TDIR movie was renamed or that there was a kerfluffle over it, but I for one am very glad for the renaming (even though I never plan to see the movie). I did not spend all those hours memorizing singsong rhymes* and mispronouncing Welsh for Hollywood to screw it all up for me!

I retroactively suspect that the Prydain Chronicles and Kaw the Crow had more than a little to do with my unconscious coming up with my online pseudonym.

Hee. :D *puts on list* I'm actually right at this moment slapping down the outline my brain came up with last night before I fell asleep for one of the fandoms I offered for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, so I don't forget it in case that's the one picked. XD So even if that's not one I get assigned to write, it'll probably show up at some point. *not saying what it is* XD

The dream was maddeningly vague on details of the butterfly story - the witch had a son who may or may not be evil, and there was something about following rabbit trails through a field of grain that look now, when I'm awake, a lot more like deer trails. Maybe there are really big rabbits in this world. XD

[identity profile] kurobahikaru.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're giant, sentient rabbits. >.> <.< o.o

And, there's a quest...?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-10-09 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
:)

Dunno if there's a quest, although there usually is in this sort of story, wot? And I have no idea where the giant spool of rope comes into it. XD

Deer are really just extra-big bunnies with long legs. I've looked closely at our guys' heads, and their faces are really just like compacted deer or maybe wild goat faces.

Maybe you were going to get onto a ship? Sailing ships need lots and lots of rope, so a dockside would be a logical place to find them.

Than again, dream logic isn't really the same as waking logic.

The spool of rope was sitting on dirt, and there were trees in the background. There may ahve been a big drop-off behind the area the rope was, too. There seemed to be a lot of drop-offs in the dream.

Which segued into something about the three good fairies from Disney's Sleeping Beauty, and then something about how I was trying to write this dream down but they keyboard was in the refrigerator.

>> the keyboard was in the refrigerator. <<

XD

Maybe because you're trying to preserve the dream! (Although it could also be a joke about writer's block ... .)

I was just thinking of those three goofball fairies - Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather! - myself because the Young Lady is reading Godchild, and the hero's little half sister is named Mary Weather (like, Mary Frances or Mary Jane), and I was thinking that Kaori Yuki must have been brainwashed by the Disney Sleeping Beauty at some early age.

I think I remember the butterfly book. But it's been so long.

I pretend The Seeker isn't remotely connected to The Dark is Rising. It's easier that way.

You do know about [livejournal.com profile] tdir_readathon?

New York Times gave The Seeker a good review: "generic fantasy plot but saved by great editing and decent acting." I dunno, I might see it. ^^; Though I suspect the reviewer went in thinking: it's fantasy, of course it's going to be generic -- and the acting he's is talking about is Will's awkward adolescent-ness, which is, uh, yeah.

I hadn't even read TDIR (though it was on my list) when I saw the preview in the theater, and even then I was offended by the liberties taken. I've read it now and I take the mere existence of the movie as a personal affront. What were they thinking?
