Because [personal profile] rachelmanija wanted it...

Book poll. [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija posted a book poll in her LJ of what to take to Japan, and told me to do the same. Well, uh. I don't have that many, because I don't have a whole lot of books that are all (a) unread and (b) paperback and (c) not actively turning me off. (I mean, really: if it's remained unread over a year, it's probably not going to get read.)

So, a poll of books that I put together by going through my shelves and pulling out unread paperbacks that weren't actively repulsing me. There are a couple that are definitely coming no matter what you-all say, anything [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija picks will be weighted, and I've actually got a ton of podcasts and a few audiobooks stored on my iPod, so will be "reading" those. :)

Hmm. I have read and really liked the Martin, Ford, Spencer, Davies, and Steakley books, though I'm not sure what happened at the end of the last; so I encourage you to bring them, but I've already read them all-- and, oddly enough, recently re-read several of them.

Have you already read Spencer's Resume with Monsters? If not, that's good too.

It's really bothering me that I can't find Shanks Mare. Harrumph.

I haven't read the Spencer. I'm trying to stick to things that will engage me enough to the end, but which will not make me fall in love to the point where I won't want to leave them there to save on weight. :)

Well, I just put in another order for it - I bought it for $2.50 or something used. *That* should make my lost copy turn up. At least, I'm fairly sure I received it - it might have been lost in the mail, because I can't recall what edition it was. Oh well. If I end up with two copies, the world will not end.

* "it" being Shanks Mare.

Only one I've read is the Martin book, other than that, I chose books with interesting titles. But Martin alone should keep you busy for a while.

Game of Thrones! But, uh, you might also want to bring something fluffy as an antidote. Martin pulls no punches. It's awesome, but yeah.

... also you reminded me I hadn't read [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's LJ for a while, so I wandered over and was rewarded! I had wondered for a while why my friend and I once found Project Blue Rose in a bookstore in Santa Barbara. It was so random at the time, like the Internet had somehow strangely bled into the real world.

I voted for _The Dragon Waiting_ because it is brilliant and a John M. Ford memorial panel was proposd for Worldcon (don't know if it made it, yet), and for the two travel-specific books.

I remember Women of the Mito Domain being really interesting; I need to reread. I first learned about the nagata(? can never remember spelling) weapon used by Japanese women there.

Anyone with the last name "Steakley" wins in my book. I intend to use this adverb as often as possible. "I looked at my meal, red and juicy, lying steakly on my plate..."

Swallows and Amazons! I had forgotten all about those books.

I went for the travel books and The Dragon Waiting, which is dense and brilliant. The Martin and Davies books, IIRC, are just too damn big to take travelling. Nice to be reminded of the Arthur Ransome books. I've just read a biography of him and I'm looking to re-read them all now - did you know he was a journalist/spy in Russia during the Revolution and eloped with Trotsky's secretary?

Ooh, no I didn't know that! XD

I finished A Game of Thrones yesterday after starting it in the morning. Very engrosing read, and the sequels are just as tightly woven. Lots of enjoyment here.
